I sent out the September Advisor to the printer this morning, finally putting it to bed. It should have gone out a week ago, but I didn't have the photos I wanted, one article wasn't in, and I was having a terrible block trying to write my editorial.
Finally the article came in, I gave up on the photos and went with some lower quality ones (only to have the ones I wanted arrive last night), and managed to thrash through my editorial yesterday.
The editorial was difficult because I had to confront San Jose's "Pyramid Envy" (San Francisco has one, we don't). Often our pyramid envy goads city leaders, movers and shakers to do stupid things like kill a transit network to bring BART to San Jose. Baseball San Jose is our most recent bout. The leaders, movers and shakers are trying to drum up support to bring a Major League Baseball team to San Jose. San Francisco has a team, Oakland has a team (which we would like to steal), so they think that San Jose should have one too.
The only problem with this is that San Jose already has a baseball team. The San Jose Giants are a single A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. And San Jose Giants serve the city well. They provide a good game at affordable prices with good, reasonably priced food. A family can afford to come to the games regularly. I can afford season tickets. Our neighborhood groups can have baseball nights without bankrupting them. San Jose Giants baseball is neighborhood baseball.
This contrasts with corporate baseball in the Majors where for over twice the price you get a seat in the stratosphere, the food may be as good but it is a few dollars more, and you can never make a connection with the players. It is tough for families and near impossible for neighborhood groups to afford.
So my editorial was a subtle reminder that the pie in the sky might not be so peachy. Yes it would be cool to have a Major League Baseball team in San Jose, but it would kill off what is great about San Jose baseball. Figuring out how to say that in 400 words proved difficult.
Anyway the Advisor is in bed and I can relax and move on to Bark, the UNC, and the UNSCC (oh joy). Oh, if you want to read it, a pdf of The Advisor is available online
