An interesting nugget from an otherwise rather ordinary piece on blogging from The Weekly Standard.

I am not of the crowd that feels too much meta-blogging is taking place. How can we understand blogging as a social phenomenon (no more nor less challenging than grasping the technical pieces) if we don't discuss it collaboratively in weblogs?

Oliver Wrede's Golden rules for Newbies to Frontier and Radio Userland will help developers who are new to Userland to understand what sits under the hood technically - as well as some of the ways Userland developers approach their work.

While out-of-date in the particulars, Oliver captures a certain 'something' about the culture. My favorite:

"In my own experience the people at Userland consider each development step very carfully and with all the experience in that business over years. As long as they know they won't harm the process they basically are also pretty open, transparent and encouraging innovative ideas.

They may not be so responsive to feature requests or bug reports, but the reason for that mainly could be that either they are fixing things or they are already baking the "next insanely great thing".

It may be that documentation is not quite right, or this-n-that feature is buggy - but as far as I am convinced today: It will always be that way - so don't complain - just report the bloody bug in a nice tone to the discussion group...."
