Closest Asteroid Yet Flies Past Earth [Slashdot]

"New Scientist reports that an asteroid about the size of a small house passed just 88,000 kilometres from the Earth by on Saturday 27 September - the closest approach of a natural object ever recorded. Geostationary communication satellites circle the Earth 42,000km from the planet's centre. The asteroid, designated 2003 SQ222, came from inside the Earth's orbit and so was only spotted after it had whizzed by."

Dodged a bullet. Somewhere there's one with our name on it.

Newsreels of years gone by. British Pathe has put 75 years of history online - commercial-free. [Christian Science Monitor | Sci/Tech]
This is fantastic! There's some excellent footage of San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake.

Hit Me With Your Best Shot.

The Los Angeles Times finally unloads its best dirt on Arnold, under the headline "Women Say Schwarzenegger Groped, Humiliated Them." Opening paragraph:

Six women who came into contact with Arnold Schwarzenegger on movie sets, in studio offices and in other settings over the last three decades say he touched them in a sexual manner without their consent.

[Hit & Run]
And I just heard Governor Grope talking about this, saying if he offended anyone he was deeply sorry. Of course, those who weren't offended should call his secretary.
