Pirates and Thieves © 2003, John H. Farr

This is amazing: de facto president Cheney has all these stock options from Halliburton tucked away, right? He can't possibly benefit from those, right?? Well, right now Halliburton shares go for less then 25 bucks. At that level, the options are worthless. He can't cash out until the price goes a good bit higher than that. You know that $87 billion they're about to approve? A big chunk of that will go to pay for Halliburton's no-bid contracts in Iraq. Bingo, the stock goes up ...

It's all here in a John Nichols piece at The Nation. Nichols also carefully points out that while Cheney has said that any money from those options would go to "charity," that's an awfully broad definition that includes all manner of right wing non-profits. He isn't the only one with Halliburton stock options, either.

This really stinks. Hard to distinguish from the rest of the odoriferous swamp gas emanating from the capital of the land of the once-free, but there it is. [FarrFeed]

Art and Science Meet With Novel Results. The novel "Radiant Cool" is a noir thriller, but is also a serious work of scholarship, the unlikely vehicle for an abstruse new theory of consciousness. By Emily Eakin. [New York Times: Science]
Oooh. Now this one sounds like fun.

Why Does the Bush Administration Lie All the Time?.

And here is Condi Rice lying just for the hell of it:

Through the Looking Glass: Condi Rice said, in May, 2002:

I don't think anybody could have predicted that these people would take an airplane and slam it into the World Trade Center, take another one and slam it into the Pentagon; that they would try to use an airplane as a missile, a hijacked airplane as a missile.

Well, guess what: they were warned, specifically, about terrorists plotting to fly airplanes into buildings:

In 1998, US agencies discovered that "a group of unidentified Arabs planned to fly an explosive-laden plane from a foreign country into the World Trade Center" - but did little about it, the 30-page report [on intelligence failures in Sept. 11th] says.

That's a report from the BBC on an inquiry led by Eleanor Hill into intelligence failures leading up to Sept. 11th -- strangely, google news turns up nothing on the report, and on the inquiry, only a subpoena tiff with the FAA.
