Who Lost Space
Smiling Like Venus, Wary Like Mars.
Sending astronauts into orbit could indicate that the world's most
powerful nations fear space could one day be a setting for war. By Jim
Yardley. [New York Times: Science]
It's not hard to imagine. I've
already been reading some posts blaming the whole China space program
on, you guessed it, Bill Clinton. The truth is that getting into space
is hardly, well, rocket science these days. The Chinese got a lot from
the Russians, of course, and some technology from us, but there's no
reason whatsoever to think they couldn't have done it completely on
their own. And why wouldn't China be on its guard against a power that
claims and uses first strike rights?
