Bush Plan to Honor Dr. King Stirs Criticism. Bush makes a mockery of the memory of Dr. King on the seventy-fifth aniversary of his birth. The President's perfunctory appearance at Dr. King's grave allows him to get the federal government to pick up the considerable tab for the $2,000-a-plate Republican fundraiser in Atlanta. Civil rights leaders are outraged at the poor taste of pairing the two events. Every president since Ronald Reagan has come to Atlanta, the birthplace of Dr. King, to lay a wreath at his grave. When President Clinton came in 1996, he received a standing ovation. But this presidential visit will be different. It seems to have lifted the lid on long-simmering anger many blacks feel toward Mr. Bush. Some Bush policies, including tax cuts mainly benefiting those with higher incomes and cutting back on welfare-type programs, have alienated black voters, analysts say. —New York Times [Follow Me Here...]

Bay Area Baseball :: In Henry Schulman's column in today's Chronicl.... In Henry Schulman's column in today's Chronicle, Brian Sabean fails to address several key reasons why many Giants fans feel the need for another bat in the lineup.The continued absence of a legitimate threat in the lineup behind Bonds prevents the Giants from fully capitalizing on the massive number of walks Bonds receives. Having a Vlad-like bat behind Bonds wouldn't prevent teams from walking him... [Baseball Blogs :: All Baseball, All Blogs, All The Time] It's hard this year, because on the face of it the Giants haven't done much. But Sabean has a pretty good track record, so you've always got to give him the benefit of the doubt.

The NASA Budget. Here's a graphic of where the money will go in order to fly to the moon and Mars. A thin ... [[Quark Soup]]
Interesting stuff. There's an awful lot less here than meets the eye;
it's really nothing more than a ruse to make it look like he's thinking
about more than building an empire here on Earth. Typically, the vision
is really very small: only an additional $1 billion/year over current
budgets; less, next year, than he wants to spend on "promoting
marriage." Just as with the tax cuts and the debt burden, the real
heavy lifting is put on to our kids, 10-15 years down the road, while
Dubya gets to take all sorts of credit now.
In general, I like the idea of going back to the moon. The Shuttle and
Space Station are boondoggles with no purpose. The big space payoff is
in robots, which can go where we can't, and are so much less expensive.
