Senate hearing turns contentious over stem cell research. "Senate panel discussion billed as "a good news hearing" about adult stem cells quickly turned contentious Wednesday when talk turned to embryonic stem cell research. 'Are you a member of a pro-life committee?' Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., asked a scientist who testified that adult stem cells work at least as well as embryonic stem cells in experimental treatments for some diseases." Listening to the Lehrer News Hour, an excerpt from a Bush speech: "See,
we're not spending the government's money, we're spending your money,
and we need to be good stewards of it." Bush is wrong: he's not
spending our money. Because he's refusing to tax us now to pay for the money he's spending now, our children and grandchildren are going to have pay Bush's bills in the future. He's squandering our future so he can be reelected now.

A Manifesto
I hate a song that makes you think
you're not any good. I hate a song that makes you think you are just
born to lose. Bound to lose. No good to nobody. No good for nothing.
Because you are either too old or too young or too fat or too slim or
too ugly or too this or too that. . . Songs that run you down or songs
that poke fun of you on account of your bad luck or your hard
traveling. I am out to fight these kinds of songs to my very last
breath of air & my last drop of blood.

Senate Vote Blocks Effort to Ban Gay-Marriage in Constitution. The loss effectively ended a drive to move the proposal through the Senate before the November elections. By By CARL HULSE. [The New York Times > Home Page]
This is a real victory and puts an end to a totally shameful episode in politics. But it's still shameful that 48 Senators apparently voted for a poorly written amendment to the constitution which had been prepared with no public hearings, no debate in committee, and the blatent purpose of enshrining bigotry in the U.S. Constitution to get a president re-elected.

Saturn Hailstorm. When Cassini reached Saturn On June 30th, it dashed through a gap in Saturn's rings, twice. One of onboard science instruments recorded a flurry of ring-dust harmlessly striking the spacecraft. [Science @ NASA]
Really cool -- watch the animation of Cassini moving through the rings as you listen to the dust particles strike it.

Red Cross: US may be hiding detainees. "The international Red Cross said Tuesday it suspects the United States is hiding detainees in lockups across the globe, though the agency has been granted access to thousands of prisoners in Iraq and elsewhere. Terror suspects reported by the FBI as captured have never turned up in detention centers, and the United States has failed to reply to agency demands for a list of everyone it's holding, said Antonella Notari, spokeswoman for the International... "stupid dirty girl". California Education Secretary Richard Riordan told a 6-year-old girl that her name means "stupid dirty girl". Yes, it's bizarre and disturbing. You can watch the video here. Hello, God, it's me, Dubya
Mark Morford is very, very funny this morning.
Are you there, God? It's me, George W. Come in, Almighty. Do you read me?
It's about 8:00 pm and it's just after my last bubble bath of the
day and here I am again, kneeling here in the Oval Office all by myself
in my most favoritest PJs, the funny ones with the little M-1 tanks and
baseball players all over them. I gots some problems, Lord.
Look, I've done everything you asked. I've been good. Haven't I?
