Zimbabwe set to pass media law. Zimbabwe's parliament is set to approve a new media bill, which will muzzle the independent media and ban foreign journalists. [BBC News: world]

Why does he even bother with a law? Sending his "war veterans" around to take over the independent media's property seems like more his style.

John Rhodes wrote an in-depth description of his painful experience installing Norton AntiVirus 2002. Ouch. All I can say is, the Mac version is much better!

Thought for the day:

You can always blame another dimension when nothing else explains a phenomenon.

Here's an Introduction to RSS which provides the best explanation of why RSS is a good thing that I could find. It's a bit light on the "how" though. Fortunately, the same site also has an article on Creating RSS files for your Web site.

I found a useful alternative to an "RSS evangelism" site. Create RSS channels from HTML news sites [perl.com] explains how to produce your own RSS feed from somebody else's HTML using Perl. It is usually better to do things for yourself than try to get someone else to do them, after all.

I'm looking for a site with a nice clear explanation of what RSS is, why it's a good thing, and how RSS files work. If I can find such a site, I can use it to help me convince web sites to add support--or so I hope. I could write a simple "why I want it" sort of explanation myself, but I don't have the knowledge to explain the "how."

How I learned to stop worrying, and abandoned Mac OSX [The Register ]: "It's the User Interface, Stupid."

I completely agree with this. I use OS X on a daily basis at my job testing Mac software, and I despise it. I will continue to use the Mac OS for any "administrative" tasks and on my personal systems, but if I had to chose between OS X and Windows, I would chose Windows. It's actually more reliable and easier to use than OS X.

Of course, my favorite computer is my Newton MessagePad 2100, so I'm used to using an "obsolete" OS that is superior to the newer OSes.

Next up for Pocket PC, wireless telephony [PDABuzz.com]: "Microsoft is quickly advancing the Pocket PC platform with the next goal to create a Wireless Pocket PC specification including CDMA and GSM support. "

Of course, the Newton has had this for years with the Nokia Phone Card. Unfortunately, like so many things GSM it works great in Europe and not at all in America.

Today I'm running Radio on my laptop, which I take to work with me. I'm using iCab, running on the same laptop, to access it. This is different from the weekend, when I was using Internet Explorer on my desktop G4. I quickly noticed that iCab on the same computer is much slower than IE on a different computer.

Also today I set up an email account for the mail-to-weblog feature. This is the first post sent via email--I would have preferred to send it using my Newton, but unfortunately the screwed-up network here at work doesn't like my Newton's Ethernet card.

Incidentally, I discovered one advantage of composing a post in an email client. Unlike web browsers, Entourage has a spell-checker!

The Pinedale Roundup: "Mr. Storer, still in his pajamas and his hands on his head, surrounded by armed officers, was given an option. He and his girlfriend, who was wearing a t-shirt and little else, could wait outside in the cold until the ATF could obtain a warrant on a Sunday morning, or he could just sign the consent."

For people from warmer climates, it's really cold in Wyoming in December. People in pajamas or underwear will be dead of exposure in a matter of hours. So, the Feds were essentially threatening to murder Mr. Storer and his girlfriend if he didn't give his "consent."
