How Many People Died as a Result of U.S. Bombing in Sudan?. Noam Chomsky has been claiming that tens of thousands of people died as a result of the U.S. attack on a Sudanese bombing attack, but even he confesses ignorance at how the estimates he's been touting were arrived. [LeftWatch.Com]

There's no reason to lie about how many deaths were caused by that attack--one person was killed directly, and even that was too many to sacrifice for President Clinton's ego. No matter how many died, it was still an "unprovoked and dastardly attack."

Antarctic lakes show climate effects. Scientists see dramatic changes in lakes in the region of the Antarctic Peninsula as temperatures rise. [BBC News: sci/tech]

Curious. Last week temperatures in Antarctica had been falling for 30 years. Maybe the BBC should just run a story, "Scientists have absolutely no idea what's going on in the Antarctic."

A Sad, Infuriating Tale: After being battered in the marketplace, AOL turns to the courts. [Reason Magazine]

If AOL were all that worried about Microsoft's alleged anti-competitive practices in the first place, then why did it buy Netscape? No one forced AOL to shell out $10 billion. And AOL's Steve Case, who is hardly a naive guy, knew full well that Joel Klein and his colleagues at the Justice Department were claiming that Microsoft was crushing Netscape unfairly.

Clearly, AOL's management believed that it could compete with Microsoft anyway - especially with a massive federal lawsuit preoccupying Microsoft's own management. But just as clearly, AOL was wrong. Netscape turned out to be a poor investment (its market share has plummeted to about 10 percent, compared with nearly 90 percent for Microsoft's Internet Explorer, which, by the way, AOL chose as its online service's own browser).

There has been some discussion on the Script Meridian mailing list (which has lately risen from the dead) about what the difference is between Frontier and Radio. My point of view as a long-time user of Frontier 4.2.3a is that Radio is just a different version. The main difference is that Radio is affordable--there was no way I was ever going to spend $900 for Frontier, but I'm actually happy to spend $40.

Dave Winer added this comment, "Here's a feature request. Try disagreeing with someone without questioning their integrity. That will get your readers to respect you more because you're showing respect for them. Give them the facts, and your point of view, without making someone else bad. (Or hypocritical, disingenuous, unethical, weak, stupid, or whatever. Save those kinds of allegations for special occasions that warrant such escalation.)"  [Scripting News]

I guess some more widely-read weblogs must have commented on those Radio screenshots. In the interest of fairness, I'm re-writing my comments a bit. "Disingenuous" is a poor choice of words since it implies something about Dave's integrity, when I really don't have any basis for that implication.

I quickly switched back to the Transmitter theme. Although the bland gray look suited me, the gray bar on the left was too wide and the text column too narrow.

Dave Winer writes, "Skimming yesterday's Scripting News I see a comment from a law professor saying that AOL must have been quite unhappy with the Microsoft settlement. I wanted to say this. I was quite unhappy with it too. It leaves Web developers at the mercy of Microsoft. Not a great place to be." [Scripting News]

Web developers are only at the mercy of Microsoft if they want to be! There are plenty of other browsers available, such as iCab, Opera, even Netscape. If you don't like the popularity of MSIE, use one of the alternatives, and let people know you are doing so.

Complaining about being "at the mercy of Microsoft" when all the Radio screenshots show Windows MSIE seems inconsistent. It seems to me that those screenshots could be used to show off one of the many non-Microsoft browsers (or operating systems) available.

Theoretically clicking on the picture above will subscribe you to this site, if you are a Radio user. It's a nice idea, but I think it would be nice if the picture gave some indication of what would happen when you click on it. And what happens if you aren't a Radio user? Or if you have Radio running on a different system from the one you're browsing on?

Japanese savings switching to gold. Taizo Hirose, Takahiko Hyuga, and Miki Anzai at Bloomberg News Service via The Honolulu Advertiser - Japanese savings switching to gold - In April, the Japanese government plans to limit its deposit insurance to a little over $75K per depositor. Rich Japanese with half a brain are moving their money to gold. [lew] [End the War on Freedom]

This is obviously the smart thing to do, but I wonder how the Japanese government will react. If it was the US, Congress would no doubt pass a law making it illegal for peasants to own gold, thus forcing them to continue using the banks (it's been done before).

Sony Crushes UK PS2 Mod Chip Developers [Slashdot]

This is very shortsighted of Sony. I wouldn't consider buying a PS2 unless I could add a mod chip immediately, because I like playing Japanese games. Officially region protection is supposed to insure that importers get their markup, but in fact most PSOne games from Japan were never brought over to the American market, or only came over a year after being released.
