Thought for the day:

You have the right to remain helpless. Should you choose to waive this right. anything you do may be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an assailant. If you cannot find one for yourself, the court will release one for you.

Packing.org. Philippine CCW Rip Off (All United States: 1 comments, 194 hits) [Packing.org]

The author is complaining that a concealed weapon permit in the Phillipines costs about $200/year in bribes. I wish Californians had it so good! Getting a permit here costs tens of thousands of dollars in "campaign contributions." I'd be delighted if I could carry for only $200!

Taliban Prisoners Want to Go to Cuba. Jailed fighters of the fallen Taliban shout the name of their former foe, but no longer in anger. "We want to go to an American prison," many plead. [AP World News]

Conditions in Afghan prisons are terrible, so the prisoners there want to go to the much nicer prison in Guantanmo Bay. What do the "human rights groups" that were wailing and gnashing their teeth over Camp X-Ray say to the Afghans holding those prisoners? Nothing--apparently they blame the US for that too.

The SEC and Fake Investment Sites [Slashdot]

I found one! Oh, wait, that's a real fake investment site.

I actually think this is a nice idea. I disagree with almost everything about the SEC, including its very existence, but a program that actually teaches people to use their brains and be responsible is truly useful. In fact, it's such a good idea that it will probably be shut down amid howls of outrage from the media.

AT&T Broadband addresses home router concerns. Johnson said that sharing cable modem access between domiciles is the same as sharing cable television access between domiciles -- not only is it against the company's terms of service, but it's a violation of federal law. [MacCentral]

Does that mean that inviting your neighbor who doesn't have cable to watch something in your apartment is illegal? If not, how is that different from letting your neighbor access your 802.11b network?

Female bomber's mother speaks out. The mother of the first female Palestinian suicide bomber says she hopes more women will follow her daughter's example. [BBC News: world]

This demonstrates why peace between Israel and the Palestinians is impossible at present. However, I believe the situation will improve eventually. Such an insane and evil culture will eventually die out as its members blow themselves up, leaving the sane Palestinians to coexist peacefully with Israel.

New York Times - free registration required Republicans Divide Over Disclosing Information.

Republican senators are breaking ranks over the White House's refusal to tell Congress about contacts between Enron and the administration's energy task force.

[Privacy Digest]

The problem isn't disclosure of information, it's the very existence of an "energy task force." Where in the Constitution is the President given any power to create such a task force?

Throwing the DNA switch. Scientists look to a future when they can literally turn cancer genes on and off. [BBC News: sci/tech]

I wonder if this could also be used to turn off aging. I've read that a cell can only reproduce a limited (if large) number of times before dying, maybe that limit is genetic?

Southern Africa 'backs Mugabe'. As Commonwealth foreign ministers meet in London to consider a call for Zimbabwe's suspension, opposition is reported in southern Africa. [BBC News: world]

There's no mention of why the other African nations oppose suspending Zimbabwe from the Commonwealth. Maybe they just like Communist dictators? That's certainly possible, but I'd like to know more about what they're thinking.
