I just added a story (see the "About" link to the left) to this weblog. Apparently there's no way to edit a story within Radio once you've clicked the submit button. Presumably I could edit the text file in the Radio folder and it would upstreamed, but it would be nice if there was an Edit this Page button.

United Poultry Concern cries fowl over fast food "bestiality" ad [Politech]

Is this a joke, like the ban dihydrogen monoxide campaign? The Politech posting says it's not, but I find it hard to believe that any organization would actually let someone insane enough to say such things seriously speak for it.

The Missing Gun in the Recent School Shooting. Another school shooting occurred last week and the headlines were everywhere the same, from Australia to Nigeria. This time the shooting occurred at a university, the Appalachian Law School. As usual, there were calls for more gun control. Yet in this age of 'gun-free school zones,' one fact was missing from virtually all the news coverage: The attack was stopped by two students who had guns in their cars.

The fast responses of two male students, Mikael Gross, 34, and Tracy Bridges, 25, undoubtedly saved multiple lives. [FirearmNews.com]

The original Associated Press story did mention that the students were armed. All of those news organizations must have read that fact and deliberately chose to omit it from their coverage.

iCab drives to version 2.7 [MacCentral]

I'm currently using iCab to maintain this weblog (I also use IE). So far there haven't been any noticeable differences in the new version.

Out of curiousity I looked around for any Newton XML support, and all I could find was ntox, a parser. There doesn't seem to be anything that XML-RPC support could be built on. Not that I could do something like that anyway, but it is worth thinking about.

Conservative group preparing to sue libraries that don't filter [Politech]

Here's a better use of the ACLU's time and money. They could file a suit against any libraries that don't filter religion, and then agree to drop it if the Conservatives drop theirs.

ACLU Goes to Bat for Satan Against Florida Town's Edict Banning Evil One. The ACLU has sent a letter to Mayor Carolyn Risher that said it will file a federal lawsuit unless she removes anti-Satan proclamations from four posts that sit at the town's entrances. [Fox News]

It's not clear from the story if the mayor was making a joke, or if the mayor is a joke. Either way, the ACLU really needs to develop a sense of humor before they waste any money on this case. There's no shortage of serious civil rights violations they could help with, if they really wanted to.

Father jailed for 'rink rage' killing. An American man who killed another father in front of their sons in a row at a youth ice hockey practice is jailed for six to ten years. [BBC News: world]

Six years is ridiculous for murder--although for some reason he was convicted of "involuntary manslaughter." It's no wonder parts of America have high crime (this happened in Boston), when murder is punished less severely than drug possession.

A .NET Primer For Mac Users [MacSlash: A daily dose of Macintosh News and Discussion]

I'm still confused. At first it sounds like .NET is just a name for web services accessable via SOAP (Radio and Frontier are mentioned as being interoperable). However, as the article continues .NET sounds more like Sun's idea for a Java OS, with its own language and virtual machine. So is .NET supposed to be a Java replacement that communicates via SOAP?

The article also misses out on answering my main question, which is "what's the point?"

AvantGo Gets Sync Patent. Covers mobile client-server syncs [allNetDevices Wireless News]

Does AvantGo really do any syncing? Maybe they added something in the year since I last used their service, but it was pretty much one-way then. You could submit a form and it would be uploaded at your next hotsync, but that was it.

Thought for the day:

Government is good at only one thing: it breaks your legs, hands you a pair of crutches, and says, "See, without us you wouldn't be able to walk."

Holidays better than expected for PDA's, Palm rebounds [PDABuzz.com]

This is good news! Whether you like the Palm OS or not, having strong competition for the PDA market is a good thing. If this keeps up, maybe some company will succeed at making a "Newton-like" device.

Australia Nixes Immigration Requests. As a hunger strike by asylum seekers at a remote Outback detention center entered its 10th day Friday, Australia flatly rejected calls to soften its harsh immigration policy, saying it would continue to lock up all illegal immigrants. [AP World News]

I hope the anti-immigrant people in the US, and especially in California, are paying attention to these stories from Australia. A country can have any immigration policy it wants, but throwing people into concentration camps isn't going to make the rest of the world like them very much.
