Thought for the day:

Newton's long-term prospects are less certain, although if failure comes, it is more likely to be the consequence of a loss of nerve by executives elsewhere at Apple than the fault of the Newton team.

I saw Black Hawk Down today. I was impressed by how realistic it was, and the movie does a very good job of fitting a day-long battle into under two hours of screen time. It doesn't go too much into the background, but it does a very good job of showing what happens when good soldiers are put in an impossible situation.

Homeland Security Jokes

George W. Bush was bragging to Russian President Putin. "Our Homeland Security measures have been so effective that we are now terrorist-free!"

"Come, now, George," Putin laughed. "Surely you exaggerate!"

"No, not at all. I'll tell you what. The first three terrorists you see, you can shoot them yourself, and you can have my job to boot!"

The very next day on his way to fly home, Putin spotted four men holding a group of people at gunpoint, taking their belongings, making dire threats to all who offered resistance. The Russian president quickly put a stop to it as Bush had suggested.

The headline for the morning's Washington Post read, "Slavic Man Claims He's President, Shoots Four FAA Security Guards."

Are Political Parties Inherently Undemocratic?. In George Washington's Final Farewell Address he warned against the dangers of adopting a system based on political parties. However, despite the urgings of the first President, the government of the United States is dominated by two major parties. Is this a twisting of democracy or an inevitable practicality? [kuro5hin.org]

The twisting of democracy is in the way the system operates. The "two" parties collude with each other and with the media to make sure that no unapproved ideas are heard by the public. We do have other parties, they're just not allowed to participate in the election process except for the formality of being on the ballet.
