Mark Lemmons of Creo points out that there is an OS X version of Six Degrees. That's fine, but OS X is not the Mac OS--attempts by Apple to confuse customers notwithstanding. I dislike OS X tremendously, and I would rather use the Windows version if Windows and OS X are the only choices.

Scientists fight research controls. Opposition is building to UK Government plans to widen control of science subjects deemed too sensitive to research and teach. [BBC News: sci/tech]

Scientists who wish to research and teach should consider relocating to a free (or less un-free) country. Southern California has many very nice universities, a surprisingly large number of British expatriates, and you will hardly ever need an umbrella here.

If the ACLU payed any attention to the Second Amendment or gun owners, Mr. Silverstein would be aware that the BATF has been acting this way routinely for decades.

West Bank Attacker Is Shot Dead. A Palestinian tried to set off a bomb in a Jewish settlement supermarket in the West Bank on Friday, wounding a woman before being shot and killed by a shopper, a witness and police said, casting a shadow over attempts to ease Israeli-Palestinian tensions. By itself this is a depressingly normal event. What's unusual is that the US media actually admitted that it was a civilian who shot the terrorist.
