Thought for the day:
Good intentions will always be pleaded for every assumption of authority. It is hardly too strong to say that the Constitution was made to guard the people against the dangers of good intentions. There are men in all ages who mean to govern well, but they mean to govern. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters.
Daniel Webster

This list of my favorite weblogs (that are tracked by weblogs.com) is finally working! I'm not sure where it gets the logs in the list, though. I've noticed that some items repeat, for example. And it doesn't include Libertarian Samizdata, which I actually read more than any of the five items on the list as I write this...
Update: This now uses the new style XML-RPC call introduced in Radio 8.0.4.

Israel Rethinking Targeted Killings. The Israeli military's legal adviser reportedly proposed tightening criteria for targeted killings of Palestinian extremists — just as five members of a radical Palestinian group were slain Monday in what Palestinians said was the latest Israeli assassination of suspected militants. [AP World News]
I don't really understand the US (or anyone but the terrorists themselves) would object to this. Surely it's better to blow up just the terrorists, with little or no damage to anyone else? Would people be happier if Israel followed the US approach, and indiscriminately bombed the town the terrorists might have been seen in the previous week? Actually, maybe that's it--the CIA is jealous?
I'd also like to think that there are still some peaceful, sane Palestinians who appreciate having the terrorists removed without hurting anybody else, so they can eventually negotiate a peaceful end to the whole mess.

Lizard replies to Center for Genetics and Society on cloning. Fire bad. Maybe fire good, but no one know. Since no one know, best not to make fire. That way, we not find out, which is good. Fire anger gods. Angry gods mean bad hunts and no babies. We no want no babies. Repeat: Fire bad.

World Economic Forum Takes Left Turn. They came in solidarity with this terror-wounded city. [AP World News]
This is a great headline. It accurately sums up the content of the story in one line--although, given the bias of reporters, I can't help but wonder if maybe they didn't realize the significance of the phrase "left turn."

What's coming next. A link between abortion and terrorism? A link between voting Democratic and terrorism? A link between being black or jewish and terrorism? [Scripting News]
This wouldn't surprise me--after all, the previous administration liked to link voting Republican and terrorism, conservative talk show hosts and terrorism, gun ownership and terrorism.
Incidentally, as a Libertarian I favor legalizing drugs and oppose the War on Some Drugs. However, I personally disapprove of drug use. From that perspective, I find it somewhat amusing that Dave's list suggests that drug use is also a "liberal position."

SF Chronicle: Verizon's 3G not that great. Yes, it finally gets wireless data bandwidth and, therefore, functionality beyond the level of a 1980s dial-up modem. But instead of delivering what you'd expect from a 21st century technology, it provides levels of performance and reliability roughly equivalent to a mid-'90s modem -- minus the wires. [Tomalak's Realm]
It's expensive, but it doesn't sound any worse than Ricochet was. Two things I'd like to know that aren't covered in the story, though: will the PC Card work with a Newton, and if so, when will the service be available in Los Angeles?

GM crop trials fuel concern. The next round of field trials of genetically modified crops in
Britain is likely to be as controversial as earlier attempts. [BBC News: sci/tech]
On Libertarian Samizdata, Natalija Radic said, "How can the 'left' who claim to have the interests of the common people at heart accept that food should be made more expensive by government action?"
She was writing about farm subsidies, but this is a good question to ask about the opponents of GM food also.
