The New York Times smears a potential Alan Greenspan replacement. [OpinionJournal]

Robert McTeer might be asking himself the same question. The head of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, Mr. McTeer has been named a possible successor to Alan Greenspan. Which is precisely how he was listed in a recent New York Times article. With this kicker: "Uncomfortable questions" could be provoked by any McTeer nomination, warned the Times. The cause of those "uncomfortable" questions? "Earlier this year," the article reported, Mr. McTeer had "arranged a conference at which a speech by a conservative author was criticized by some Fed officials as offensive to blacks and gays."

Earlier I speculated that the whole "offensive" bit was a setup so that liberals would have something to smear Bob McTeer with. It's looking more and more like I was right.

Today's reason why I hate OS X:

In the Mac OS if you want to empty all the files in the trash, even if they're locked, just hold down the option key while emptying. To do the same thing in OS X, I have to go to an arcane Unix directory in the Terminal and type rm -rf *.

Gee, thanks, Steve.

I've just learned that Virginia is now honoring Utah concealed weapon permits. That brings the number of states where I can legally carry a pistol up to 25. The state where I actually live is unfortunately not one of them.

Today's treason of the intellectuals. The longest-term stakes in the war against terror are not just human lives, but whether Western civilization will surrender to fundamentalist Islam and shari'a law. More generally, the overt confrontation between Western civilization and Islamist barbarism that began on September 11th of 2001 has also made overt a fault line in Western civilization itself -- a fault line that divides the intellectual defenders of our civilization from intellectuals whose desire is to surrender it to political or religious absolutism. [Armed and Dangerous]

Some interesting comments from Eric Raymond. I strongly recommend reading the comments--someone named Dean has written many which I think are even better then the original post.

Sklyarov Case Opens Today [Slashdot]

Apparently the government decided to give him a visa so he could attend after all. The question is, why does he want to? If I was in his position there's no way I'd return to the US.

Israel will sell gas masks to Kuwait for civilian distribution. In the photo: Israeli children watching news broadcast on TV during the Golf War, wearing Shalon gas masks. "Israel is... [The news, Uncensored.]

Israel is prepared to sell 2 million gas mask to Kuwait, which will be distributed to its citizens in case of an Iraqi attack on the country, the Defense Ministry has decided after consolations with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and the Foreign Ministry.

It will be interesting to see what, if any, coverage this gets from the mainstream media here in the US. I expect the European media won't cover it at all.
