2003 brings a little hope. It has just gone midnight here in the UK and so I will begin by extending my very best wishes... [Samizdata.net]

However, there is some good news to be had. The BBC TV teletext news service (no link, sorry) is reporting the result of a nationwide survey of parents the result of which is that a relatively whopping thirty one percent are considering home-schooling. The reason given was the growing disillusionment with the current education system.

That's good news for the British people. I wish that many Americans would consider home-schooling!

Slashdot | Going Through the Garbage.

frankejames writes "This is a very funny piece on how Portland politicians said it was okay for police to seize a citizen's garbage without a search warrant. But when some reporters swiped their garbage (and reported the contents!) they screamed foul play! Read Portland's top brass said it was OK to swipe your garbage--so we grabbed theirs."

[Privacy Digest]

It's hardly news that the police and politicians consider themselves above the rest of us. That's not the only double standard here though. The reporters are lucky they're members of a privileged class themselves--if they were ordinary peons, they might be facing a ten year prison sentence.

Unsurprisingly, the sweeping new "security" measures have nothing whatsoever to do with preventing hijackings.
