Any lawyers out there? Inform me why Sun would get a chance to bundle with Windows and the rest of us with competitive development platforms can't? Why not Macromedia? Why not UserLand? Why not apps players like Chandler? [John Robb's Radio Weblog]
It's because Sun has spent the money on lobbyists and lawyers, and has learned how to use the government to bludgeon their competition. Macromedia probably doesn't have the money for that kind of thing, and UserLand almost certainly doesn't. But anyone with the money and willingness to do so can use the government against competitors, there's nothing special about Sun.

Lance Knobel isn't surprised at today's economic shakeup in the Bush cabinet. "After the smarts of the Rubin and Summers tenures in the '90s, O'Neill's two years of bumbling has been a particular let down. Lindsay has inspired as much confidence as O'Neill." [Scripting News]
After reading the two news stories, I still can't see any indication of what O'Neill might have done badly. It looks to me like he was fired in part for being honest, and in part as a case of "shoot the messenger." There's nothing to suggest "bumbling" by O'Neill or Lindsay (who is hardly mentioned).
I suspect that Mr. Knobel's opinion of the man has more to do with his political party than anything else. I think it likely that the only thing O'Neill needed to do for Mr. Knobel to label him "bumbling" was to serve in the Bush administration--and likewise, the only "smart" things Rubin and Summers did was to serve Clinton.
