What if John Galt knew about the Internet?
Internet via the AC power outlet.  Story in the NY Times today on the ongoing efforts in this area.  There's even a local company in Palo Alto, PowerWan, involved.  When I see a Silicoin Valley cafe with a hot-spot, I always look around for a power outlet, since my laptop's battery is junk.  So much for being wireless (ToT).  Anyway, this would kill two birds with one stone.   My vision of the future, internet access via the static electricity in the air, similar to the way John Galt's motor in Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand worked..  Let's see who can build a switch to handle that!

Reminds me, I was stoked to see a store called John Galt in Vale Colorado a few years back.  Looks like Greenspun was there too and has a photo.  It's a high-end clothes shop.

Anyone click on those AdWords ads?
NY Times piece on Google today pushing the hype for Google.  They must have one heck of a PR department, or NY Times might be hungry for interesting, young entrepreneur stories.  I don't know about you, but I don't think I've clicked on an AdWord text ad on the right side of the screen even once.  Much less clicked on one of those colorful obvious ads atop the search results.  Ok, maybe I did once, only to find out it leads to some less than desired solicitation, then never clicked thru again.  Hats off to them, as word is they've made just under $300M in 2002.

Ever since I once saw Google redirecting all their search result links thru their own server, I've been a bit more cautious using their service.  Also, their home page comes up much slower than usual in the past few months.  I've been happy using AllTheWeb for my searching needs recently.  I wonder which search engine does the most thorought job indexing weblogs?

Two very good pieces describing RSS

RSS seems like a powerful "agreement" for syndicating anything.  I was wondering today if I could perhaps create a feed of my Java Ant build file activity for later reference.  Could be a simple way to review my development activity, or for anyone on my team to. I guess one could use RSS and an aggregator to feed/read anything one wanted.  Seems like some others are already onto using RSS for monitoring servers and then using Outlook to read the feed:  Got this from Greg Reinacker's Weblog:

Event Log Monitoring with RSS.

I've written some sample code to generate a RSS feed from the Windows Event Logs. This is very handy for monitoring servers - perhaps a poor man's SNMP monitor. :-)

Here's an screen shot showing it in NewsGator (click for larger version):

I learned about this FreeConference.com service last week.  Free phone conferences for 3 or more. Siimple web page for your setup. You just need to pay the long distance charges.

McDonald's has a map of their WiFi enabled locations.  Seems like they only have a handful of locations in Manhatten so far, but they suggest to visit the site often to see the spread across the US.

Sort of related, I read about this company Vivato today.  They're providing the first outdoor "hardened" WiFi capability.  Outdoor Wifi switch is $14K. This is a quote from their recent press release:

"We are looking forward to trialing the product through a deployment that will give wireless coverage to several of our multi-tenant office buildings from the rooftop of our Piedmont Center headquarters in Atlanta. Ultimately we fully expect Vivato's technology to create a more efficient way for us to deliver broadband service to our customers, as well as create new business opportunities via a public access Wi-Fi network."
