".. everything was probably clear-cut from a theoretical and mathematical standpoint. In contrast, people like me think in terms of likes and dislikes and whether things are interesting or boring, rather than good or bad, or right or wrong", Mari Matsunaga, founder of NTT Docomo's i-mode from her book The Birth of i-mode.
This is highly recommended reading for anyone in the Silicon Valley that's trying to appeal to the mass market (non-techies) with their "technology". Matsunaga-san outlines her amazing voyage from chief editor at a very large magazine publisher in Japan, not having every written a single line of html, to the founder of one of the most successfull internet technology rollouts ever. 30 million users in 2 years. It took AOL 10 years to get that many users. She's one of my heros. Bottom line, make the product interesting and easy, don't talk about the technology, help your content providers make money, use advertising/branding that really grabs people, and the customers will come.
