Edgar Bronfman is the former CEO of Seagrams who retired several years ago at 65. He has always been a go-getter, a do-er and enjoyable man to sit down and talk to-- when and if you can pin him to a chair for more than 15 minutes. Several years ago I had the pleasure of talking to Edgar at a social affair about how he was doing since he left Seagram's. (My parents had a known him.) He commented he was busier than ever, wasn't going to let grass grow under his feet and may be write a book. Well here it is.
Edgar like my father believes that with our life span increasing, people need to understand that retirement isn't a death sentence and people have the opportunity to live another 25-35 years, so why not make the best of it? He advises that people do something good for others, give back to their communities and interests, keep moving and never stop learning. Sound advice. His book includes interviews of Jimmy Carter and Walter Cronkite.
However considering today's climate of not having good retirement programs-- I'm still left wondering how I'll ever have the income to retire. May be Edgar could write another book and tell me how to do it.
The Webby Awards gave the Best Online Community Award Tuesday night to Idealist.org. Oh Bouy! If this is community, then I can put lipstick on a pig and call it a Victoria Secret's model. Right?
It is being reported that Southwest Airlines is going to start manditory charges for passengers for two seats if airport agents conclude they couldn't fit comfortably in one. However a Southwest spokesman denies any change in Southwest policy. Uh huh. Reuters is reporting the standard SWA seat is only 18 3/4 inches wide. Silly me, I just measured my office chair, it's 20 inches wide without the armrests. So went will SWA put seats in their plane people with normal fanny's can fit?
Update: If they do not sell out the flight, people who are forced to pay for two seats can apply for a refund.
The Space Shuttle landed this morning at Edwards AF Base. I knew it was about to land when I heard three major booms that seriously rattled the house about 10-15 minutes before landing. Susan should be happy it's home on terra firma. Checking... Yep! She's thrilled!

David Weinberger caught the Boston Globe story about paying for a reporter to go fire walking to find spiritual strength. Oy! What a load of crap! While David deals with the physics of thermodynamics in his take. It has always amazed me how people seek out this these risky behaviors and call it spiritual growth. Bull shit. Don't they have a brain?
I echo David's comment: "The Globe ought to be ashamed of itself for spreading this type of crap. "
At 12:37 PM this afternoon a magnitude 5.0 earthquake hit an area 10 miles NW of Evansville, Indiana. The areas of Southern Indiana and Illinois and Kentucky reported feeling the shock.
John Robb's reporting... Here's an update on Dave. He just gave me a call. He sounds great but hoarse. Very upbeat. He was overwhelmed by the wonderful outpouring of support for his recovery. I expect that he will be back online this weekend. [John Robb's Radio Weblog]

Doc's Home--
It appears our global jetsetter, Doc Searls has arrived home from the London - Munich tour. Jetlag hasn't set in-- yet. However I'd venture to bet tomorrow's going to be a long day with The Linux Show at 6pm Pacific time. Like Doc, I was also surprised about the iPod fund for Dave. I missed getting in on the deal today, because I was tied up in a press conference and rewrite session.
