Palm Springs or Bust?

The Shifted Librarian has a New Speaking Engagement.

It's official - I'll be giving my Information Shifting presentation at Internet Librarian on Thursday, November 7. I believe this gives me an official excuse to buy some new toys! :-)

I've never been to Palm Springs - can anyone recommend a good hotel? Thanks!

Ahem-- PS is WONDERFUL. Once thought of as a place for old foogies to retire-- well it isn't. PS has gotten younger and a little more hip. Yes there is a large gay and lesbian community, but it is part of what's made PS great again. It's one of my top 5 places to go hide from LA and recharge. If I could I'd move there in a heart beat. A few recommendations include:

  • The Spa and Casino: one of a couple of PS area properties owned by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. Older property that's being upgraded to be a world class hotel, however its very nice now. They also have a REAL SPA on the property with full services.  2.5 blocks from Convention Center at the Wyndam. They offer specials to their internet mailing list on a regular basis.
  • The PS Hilton: across the street from The Spa and 2 blocks from the PS Convention Center. Great hotel, wonderful staff and a pool that says VACATION. They offer specials to their internet mailing list on a regular basis.
  • Merv Griffin's Resort Hotel & Givenchy Spa: Wonderful place. Not in the price range of most mortal. I've been there for events and to see Jack Sheldon. He plays there regularly and played on Merv's new CD.
  • Sherman's Deli and Bakery is an institution in PS. It's across the street one block from the Spa and the Hilton. They have wonderful and early cheap dinner specials. The folks who run the place love dogs and kids-- and are kid-dog friendly. PS's best pups dine with their owners at the outdoor tables.  Our Teddy is treated like royalty by Sam and Jan Harris (the owners) when we do brunch or lunch. Their bakery desserts can be made to go as well as eat-in.  Oh yeah-- their corned beef and matzo ball soup, are to die for! A trip to Sherman's has been known to cure the blues and make you feel great.
  • There are tons of Spas, Golf Courses, tennis courts, museum and things to do. And more wonderful resturants. (list forth coming.)
  • Good Reads about PS are Palm Springs Life, the local newspaper is the Desert Sun (check out the coupons for resturant, hotel and golf discounts.)

College Broadcasters Upset by Streaming Ruling

An organization of college electronic media outlets is bemoaning the ruling of the Librarian of Congress on streaming royalties.

The board of Collegiate Broadcasters Inc. issued a statement saying, "Unfortunately, the rates ... announced what could be the beginning of the end for many educational and student programs at colleges and universities around the country."

CBI said the process prevented the Librarian and the Copyright Office from setting rates and record-keeping requirements that "appropriately reflect our members ability to comply and pay those fees."

CBI has about 100 members including radio, TV and Web-only media.

Another Accounting Error Xerox

The WSJ is reporting that Xerox has announced another Accounting Error on their books.

"A NEW XEROX AUDIT FOUND that the company improperly accelerated far more revenue during the past five years than the SEC estimated in an April settlement. The total amount of improperly recorded revenue from 1997 through 2001 could be more than $6 billion." (online reg required)
