Basketball and Dunkin Donuts
You might wonder how those two things go together? Well our favorite NBA Dunkin Donut was supposed to play the Sonics tonight in Boston. The Sonice suffered their fourth worst defeat ever 114-74, Vin "Crybaby" Baker's box score read: DNP - Coach's Decision.
Vin Baker YTD:
47 games 18.5 min/gm 5.2 pts/gm
16 pt high game 4 rebounds/gm 0.6 assist/gm
59 Turn Overs 139 fouls

No matter how you look at it, this guy is an absolute joke. You don't even have to be a sports fan to understand it. Vin Baker and others like him is why I almost never watch any NBA anymore. Who wants to watch a bunch of over paid whiners who have no work ethic, and no respect for the game.

I listened to a Boston reporter talking about Vin on Tuesday. It was like deja vu. The reporter had that same tone, frustration, and simmering anger that Seattle felt for the past 4 years. We had to suffer watching him fall off the face of the earth, always with excuses. This guy just has no game.

The funny part is that Boston was stupid enough to take him and the dead weight that he is under the salary cap. He is also the poster child for why guaranteed contracts should never happen in sports. The only thing more strange then his numbers, is the fact that Baker did a promotion earlier this year with Dunkin Donuts, how appropriate...mj

MSFT By The Numbers...
Look at the results from Microsofts latest 10q, and ponder the following numbers:

Microsoft Financials by Segment Q2 2003

  • Client Segement (Windows) $1.97 billion profit
  • Info Workers (Office, etc) $1.88 billion profit
  • Server Platforms $498 million profit
  • Business Solutions $93 million loss
  • Home & Entertainment (XBox) $348 million loss
  • MSN $157 million dollar loss
  • CE/Mobility $33 million loss (Q1 2003)

I couldn't find the Q2 numbers for CE/Mobility. Consider that Microsoft had a $4.35 billion dollar profit on $6.52 billion dollars of revenue. That means that they had a 66.7% margin! That margin is 79% if you only look at it's monopoly core. In other words the Microsoft tax is real, and due to their move to subscription based software they will make even more in the future.

The numbers also tell how bad Microsoft is at making money outside it's core...mj
