One of those people taking a stand that will please some, and make many angry. I understand his perspective on suicide bombing, but I can never support the killing of women and children, no faith can justify such acts. Such acts aimed at the Israeli military, and politicians could be justified as similar to any rebellion. The problem here is that the rebellion has crossed the line too many times. I find no justification, and I am sickened by the killings of children.
What would we be doing if we were seeking independence from Britain in this day and age? The line between 'freedom fighter', and terrorist can be a thin one depending on where you stand. We supported the people of Afganistan against the Soviets, yet we call some of them terroist when they attack us. The difference is moral authority and perspective. None of this justifies the acts of 9/11, it just serves as a reminder that to others, their reality is just as valid, and more so, then ours.
His call for democracy in the Middle East rings true. One of the reasons I support Israel is that they are the only democracy in the region, when the surrounding countries are ruled by dictators, religious extremist, and heredity. It's hard to support anyone when they deny the basic freedoms we hold dear. Of the Islamic nations, only Turkey has any history of practicing western democracy.
Sadly, I agree with his perspective that an invasion of Iraq will only serve to create more Osama bin Ladens. Cutting off the hand does not excise the cancer. Too often we seek short term satisfaction rather then looking to the long term issues. Until we find that solution that both sides hate, but accept, we will have no peace in the Middle East...mj
