The Web And What Comes Next.
I’ve just found the need to define my position on the World Wide Web, and here is the first draft of the first part of it. I will most likely do a short version, and a long version, and I’ll complete it when I get several other things out of the way.
      Meanwhile the following is the draft written so far.
We’ve reached that time in the web’s infancy when we understand what it can do, and how to go about getting it done.
      We have some terrific tools at our disposal—Flash, QuickTime, XML, PHP, Cold Fusion, the whole database backend thing—and we’re beginning to learn to use them well.
      We’ve even started to sensibly subdivide the tasks involved in working for the web into finer distinctions than designer and developer—information architect, creative director, technical director, interface designer, project manager, production designer, database programmer, content manager, and the rest.
      Now it’s time to make the biggest leap of all, the one that has most of us trembling at the knees—the web as the medium of storytelling. Because, make no mistake, the web is the best new storytelling medium that’s appeared in a very long while.…
