Photoshop 7 Announced, Release Due 2nd Quarter.
Adobe Systems has announced Photoshop 7, and it’s due for release in the second quarter of this year. At last, now we know, and no more “Don’t mention Photoshop 7!” from Adobe’s staff.
Digital Mastery has a very good guide to what is in the upcoming release, and there is a quick rundown at MacCentral. The long-awaited arrival of Photoshop will complete Adobe’s transition of its major apps over to Mac OS X. The big mystery of the moment is what has happened to Macromedia’s efforts to do the same.
Mac rumours website Think Secret has published an article about the coming version of Flash, but that is all I have come across about Macromedia’s Mac OS X efforts. Otherwise it is the customary Macromedia roaring silence.
That absence of comment from the source cannot be doing much good for the firm—they recently reported declining revenues mainly due to the lack of new products.
On the 16th January Macromedia announced their third fiscal quarter 2002 results. “Pro forma net loss was $10.0 million,” according to the statement, “or a loss of $0.17 per share, for the third fiscal quarter 2002, compared with pro forma net income of $20.2 million, or diluted earnings per share of $0.36 for the same period in the prior year.”

On Being In Computers.
I wrote this piece after a relative excitedly phoned to tell me he had set me up with a “terrific job” in a factory.
It turned out the engineering firm in question actually wanted a hardware systems engineer who could also build and maintain networks and manage complex relational databases. I am a writer who happens to use a computer in preference to a typewriter. Hardware, networking, RDBMS—what do I know of all that?
A graphic designer of my acquaintance recently returned to Australia after 12 years working as one in Japan. He told me how a relative of his had tried to set him up as a Windows computer repair technician just after his arrival back in Perth. The designer had, of course, never touched a Windows box before in his life and had no desire ever to do so in future. These are common stories.
The frightening thing is that the people trying so hard to be helpful are not ill-educated or ignorant by nature. They just have a massive blind-spot when it comes to technology. The tragedy is that these are the same people running things in this country, and they’re running it into the ground.
