Jan Michael’s Hund+Herr.
This piece accompanied a collection of photographs in Black+White magazine by a German photographer named Jan Michael.
When I was contributing stories from Europe I continued to explore new ways of writing that would better serve the story and the purpose of the magazine. I was being exposed to all kinds of ideas about communication, all sorts of artists and writers, and it was an exciting time. I wanted those inspirations to find their way into Black+White.
The young university-graduate writers the magazine began attracting proved to be conservative in their ideas and approach to writing, though, and the new editorial staff seemed to be unaware of Black+White’s founding mission and methodology. I continued to file stories they would hack to bits, and they’d keep pushing for the most boring form possible—straight Q&As.
Next time I conceive and co-found a new magazine I’ll do my best to ignore the experts and retain as much control as possible.
