Terrific Book Discovered in Local Bookshop.
I had to go into the city today to pick up a copy of yesterday’s Sydney Morning Herald—it arrives a day or two late here—and dropped into a bookshop, although I am trying to swear off them for the duration.
After zapping through the design bookshelves—nothing new there today—I happened upon a copy of Writing Creative Nonfiction: Fiction Techniques for Crafting Great Nonfiction, by Theodore A. Rees Cheney. Flicked though it, saw it was just the thing, and bought it.
Here is a quote from the book’s cover:
“In a world where anything is possible, an infinite number of stories are waiting to be told. On any street, behind every door, within every person, exists page-turning reality. Masters of creative nonfiction, such as Joan Didion, John McPhee, and Hunter S. Thompson have proven time and time again that topics even as seemingly dry as geology or tedious as a presidential campaign, can read like fiction.”
Two writers I respect enormously wrote this about this book:
- “A wonderful book. It is a source of inspiration for aspiring young writers of nonfiction, and a marvelous book also for people who appreciate good writing.”—Gay Talese.
- “Right on target.”—Tom Wolfe.
