Sudden Oak Death

This article from the Mercury Center led me to check google. Thus far, researchers believe the cause to be a previously unknown funguslike pathogen called Phytophthora ramorum. Bleeding or oozing of a dark reddish-brown thick sap is the first symptom to appear on true oaks [Sudden Oak Death Facts].

The public is being advised about this problem (according to various sites), but I hadn’t heard about this before and it’s been going on since 1995. I don’t think I’d like to live in the city formerly known as Thousand Oaks.

I guess we’re going to need to be really careful about where we get our wood from in the future. What kind of precautions need to be taken after going hiking on the central coast? Hmmm…
