news2mail Radio Tool

news2mail moves the Radio 'News Aggregator 'out of the browser and into your mailbox. It seems like it might be useful.

SlashDot Post Processing

AlterSlash ~ the unofficial SlashDot digest. It's an interesting concept. It would be really nice if they had a no comments link. We'll have to see how it develops. [via Dane Carlson]

Security Recommendations for Microsoft

A very good set of recommendations for Microsoft to follow in it's quest to make its operating systems and application platforms more secure by Bruce Schneier and Adam Shostack.

One certain sticking point, it won't happen. Off the top of my head, I don't see them doing these things:

  1. Pulling all active scripting components from mail.
  2. Clamping down on JavaScript and ActiveX from inside Internet Explorer (putting in new security restrictions against Java might seem to fit into their plans).
  3. Withdrawing SOAP over HTTP. I see why this is a problem, just as RPC is a big security hole on Solaris systems. There must be a better way of keeping people from accidently turning on web services, but making them more difficult to implement doesn't seem all that useful.
  4. Standard install of minimal feature sets. If they do anything like this, it would probably be a security panel with most settings off by default; perhaps with net based installs of the single missing component. Close one door, open another.
  5. Automatic software updates via the Internet. They're committed to this, for good or bad.
  6. Publishing all protocols and interfaces.

A lot of people are taking an active interest in watching what Microsoft does with this new security push. It will be interesting to see what comes of it.

Radio Stuff

A new theme (well not really, it's all hand done modifications, now I get to figure out how to do a proper theme).

I am still wandering around trying to figure out how to create another root file to stick my stuff in so it doesn't get creamed. That was a problem long ago in Frontier, we only had one root file. Still not there yet (me, not Radio)...

I'm glad this is more or less done for now. I guess I'll go back to playing around with SOAP.
