Lichenometry
My "word of the day" is lichenometry.
According to the newsletter from the
Yosemite Association,
it's one of the methods that geologists used
to date this large landslide in a remote corner
of Yosemite National Park.
Somewhat near the Sawtooth Ridge, along the
northern/northeast borders of the Park, is
the remains of a huge landslide that occurred
around 1740.
Apparently, even today it still looks like
it just happened yesterday.
I located it with
topozone, about 2 miles due west of
Matterhorn Peak itself.
See this topozone URL;
you can click on the 1:25,000 tab to get a closer view — the slide is
shown near the lower right corner of that closer-in map.
I'd love to take a backpacking trip in to that spot, someday.
