2004 Presidential Election

Update: Here''s a link to Howard Dean's weblog and a picture of a Colorado highway showing support for the candidate. Here's the link on Howard Dean's website where Mark informs the campaign about the highway signs.

Wesley Clark was in Colorado yesterday, according to the Rocky Mountain News [November 10, 2003, "Clark blasts Bush, wooing Colo. Dems"]. From the article, "Results of a Newsweek poll released Sunday show that Clark, who launched his campaign two months ago, has earned a second-place spot as the favorite among Democrats. Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean remains the front-runner, according to the nationwide poll." Here's the coverage from the Denver Post [November 10, 2003, "Clark draws 850 at Denver stopover"]. Clark is quoted as saying, "'He can't find Osama bin Laden. He can't find Saddam Hussein,' Clark said. 'We have to help him find his way back to his ranch.'"

According to the AP John Kerry has fired his campaign manager. Not good news for a campaign that is a couple of months from the first primary. From the article, "Kerry released a statement saying he made a change, and that campaign manager Jim Jordan's job was being given to veteran Democratic operative Mary Beth Cahill and that Jordan was being offered another position."

The Rocky editorial staff is urging young people to register and vote in today's edition [November 10, 2003, "Sticking it to younger Americans"]. They talk about the decline since 1972 when 18 year olds were first allowed to vote and how high deficits will be going forward. From the editorial, "The administration makes soothing noises about the deficit being only a small percentage of GDP. And that's true. But it's also of little comfort to 18- to 24-year-olds. That's because the deficit given current trends will be 3.4 percent of GDP in 2013, 7.8 percent in 2023 and 20 percent by 2040. If that's not scary enough, the 2002 unfunded liability of Social Security and Medicare, obligations we - that is to say, you - have incurred but for which money has not been set aside, is $24 trillion. So why should this make 18- to 24-year-olds start voting? Because Congress is sticking you with the tab for all this."
