Bankruptcy Bill

Ariana Huffington: "So what does the bill do? It makes it harder for average people to file for bankruptcy protection; it makes it easier for landlords to evict a bankrupt tenant; it endangers child support payments by giving a wider array of creditors a shot at post-bankruptcy income; it allows millionaires to shield an unlimited amount of value in homes and asset protection trusts; it makes it more difficult for small businesses to reorganize, while opening new loopholes for the Enrons of the world; it allows creditors to provide misleading information; and it does nothing to reign in lending abuses that frequently turn manageable debt into unmanageable crises. Even in failure, ordinary Americans do not get a level playing field."

Social Security

Here's the third editorial about Social Security from the Denver Post [March 11, 2005, "Weigh two prudent steps"]. They write, "The Denver Post urges that Congress and the president weigh two prudent steps to strengthen the system - increasing the earnings ceiling subject to Social Security from $90,000 to at least $100,000 and eventually raising the eligibility age for full benefits to 68."

Denver May 2005 Election

Here's an article from the Denver Post about the opposition to the new Justice Center. From the article, "Campaign leaders who oppose Denver's proposal to build a jail and courthouse downtown panned the plan Thursday as excessive and misguided. Roughly 70 people representing an array of community groups gathered on the steps of the City and County Building to unveil the Denver Voters for Responsible Spending campaign. Speakers for the campaign said they oppose the justice-center proposal - which voters will decide on May 3 - because the city has not justified its scope or its cost. They added that the city has not dedicated enough attention to diversionary programs and other means of keeping people out of jail."
