Broadband
All you Internet junkies and others interested in bridging the digital divide should write to your state senators and representatives and state your opposition to SB 152. Current broadband providers are trying to sneak the bill through the state legislature. The bill would limit competition by limiting municipalities from offering broadband services. The providers are hoping to quell the competition from wireless.
Here's an opinion piece on SB 152 from today's Rocky Mountain News [April 1, 2005, "Speakout: Bill might hamper better broadband"]. From the article, "The regulatory freedom that allows cities to work with cable TV operators to offer new services that now compete with the traditional telcos would be abolished. Can you imagine a world without cable TV? If this bill is enacted, a world with ubiquitous, low-cost, competitive broadband Internet access will be far away."
