Filibusters
Rasmussent Reports: "Fifty-seven percent (57%) of Americans say that 'Senate rules should be changed so that a vote must be taken on every person the President nominates to become a judge.' A Rasmussen Reports survey found that just 26% disagree. If the Senate rules are changed, most Americans (51%) say the Democrats should NOT follow through on their threat to use other rules that would effectively shut down the Senate. Just 26% believe the Democrats should retaliate in that manner."

Beauprez forming committee
Bob Beauprez is in the the 2006 race for governor, according to the Rocky Mountain News [April 30, 2005, "Beauprez prepares to enter '06 race for governor"]. From the article, "What little mystery remained about Rep. Bob Beauprez's plans to run for governor in 2006 evaporated Friday as the GOP congressman made it clear that he intends to enter the race. Beauprez stopped short of making a formal announcement, but confirmed that he is putting together a team for the campaign to succeed Gov. Bill Owens, who is term-limited."

Colorado Pols thinks that the Rocky is a bit late to the party.

Will Hite rise again?
Here's an article from the Denver Post about Lake Powell [May 1, 2005, "Powell's fall bares canyon's glory"]. They write, "But the historic low-water mark is also creating euphoria, because the lake had swallowed up many beautiful places. This red-rock desert reservoir with its turquoise waters has receded into something more like the historic channels of the Colorado River and its tributaries. And Glen Canyon is reappearing."

State officials are going to look again at illegal dumping of sewage by Highlands Ranch, according to the Denver Post [April 30, 2005, "State revives sewage-dump probe"]. From the article, "The new inquiry follows a February report in The Denver Post detailing how the facility's management avoided punishment for what EPA agents described as "enormous" spills of wastewater in the spring of 2000. Several employees described to federal agents how a fire hose was used to circumvent the plant's clogging problems, draining untreated waste down a hill toward a South Platte River tributary, according to records. And one manager admitted to playing a role."

Snowpack levels are in better shape according to the Rocky Mountain News [April 30, 2005, "Storm boosts snowpack"]. From the article, "The moisture boosted statewide snowpack levels from 97 percent of the 30-year average Friday to 100 percent Saturday."

Friday snowpack measurements from the Rocky: Gunnison Basin: 125 percent; Upper Rio Grande Basin - 134 percent; San Miguel-Dolores- Animas-San Juan Basin - 133 percent; Arkansas Basin - 111 percent; Upper Colorado Basin - 87 percent; Laramie-North Platte Basin - 78 percent; South Platte Basin - 84 percent; Yampa- White River Basin - 69 percent; Statewide - 97 percent.

Also from the Rocky, "Colorado paid a $34.7 million debt to Kansas on Friday for taking too much water out of the Arkansas River, but some issues in the 21-year-old dispute remain unresolved. Gov. Bill Owens signed a measure authorizing the payment Thursday, and the money was wired to Kansas on Friday morning. Remaining issues: How much Colorado owes Kansas for legal costs; What type of measurements will be used in the future to determine each state's share of the river."

Justice Center
The Denver Post lays out the major issues around a new Justice Center today [May 1, 2005, "Voters weigh pros and cons of proposed justice center"]. From the article, "Voters will decide the issue Tuesday after a campaign that pitted Mayor John Hickenlooper and most of the city's leaders against those who have argued that less expensive solutions should be explored first."

Here's an article from the Denver Post about Referred Question 1B [May 1, 2005, "Glendale firefighters' fate rests on Tuesday's 1B vote"]. From the article, "Glendale, an enclave of Denver that covers a half-mile square, can no longer afford its own fire department. Denver, in turn, would be allowed to use Glendale's centrally located fire headquarters for a $1-a-year lease and scrap plans to build a new firehouse to serve strips of neighborhoods around Glendale. In addition, Glendale would be under the umbrella of a more formidable firefighting force, proponents say. And Denver would avoid providing free backup to Glendale's firefighters, which it has done in the past on major fires such as the fatal blaze at the Spanish Gate apartments in December 2003."

Here's the link to Coyote Gulch's coverage of Tuesday's General Municipal Election. Additional links and coverage from Fail the Jail, and Safe Denver.com, DenverGov and the Denver Public Library.

You can find the address for your polling place at DenverMaps or download a .pdf of locations from the Election commission.

The Denver Post editorial staff is urging voters to approve Referred Question 1A on Tuesday [May 1, 2005, "Vote "yes" on new Denver jail"]. They write, "So, city residents should vote 'yes' on Referendum 1A. And while you're at it, vote 'yes' on Referendum 1B to merge the Glendale and Denver fire departments, saving money for citizens of both cities."

A little more background can be found in this article from the Rocky Mountain News [April 30, 2005, "Jail's fate in voters' hands"].
