Filibusters
Bill Frist: "All 100 members of the U.S. Senate will soon decide a basic question of fairness. Will we permit a fair, up-or-down vote on every judicial nominee? Or, will we create an unprecedented 60-vote requirement for the confirmation of President Bush's judges? I sincerely hope that it is the former."
"Our Constitution grants the Senate the power to confirm or reject the president's judicial nominees. In exercising this duty, the Senate has always followed a careful and deliberate process of examining the nominees through hearings, discussing their merits in committee, debating them in the full Senate and then coming to an up-or-down vote on the Senate floor. We investigate, we debate, and then we decide."
Blogs for Bush: "It is a fishing expedition in which the Democrats hope to find something, anything to derail these nominees. This is a strong indication that the Democrats view their fight to implement the judicial filibuster as a lost cause, and are now looking for other means to keep conservative judges off the bench. It shows us that once the filibuster fight is over and won, we'll still have to keep fighting it out; the Democrats seem determined to fight us tooth and nail on the issue of judges, and that makes sense because only through the courts can the Democrats have a ghost of a chance of winning their fights."

Holtzman for Treasurer?
Colorado Pols: "Some big Republican donors are trying to talk gubernatorial candidate Marc Holtzman into running for state treasurer rather than duking it out with Congressman Bob Beauprez for the GOP nomination (and risk weakening whichever one of them makes it out of the primary), and the early word is that Holtzman is giving the idea some thought."
Update: Mark Holtzman issues a pretty strong denial of the story above, on the Pols weblog, "I have no interest in the Treasurer position or any office other than Governor."
Update: From the comments, "Holtzman denied interest in the treasurer job, but he was definitely offered. - Alva Adams"
You're right, I didn't write very clealy.

Bolton and Filibusters
Here's an editorial about John Bolton from the Denver Post [May 15, 2005, "Lessons for John Bolton"]. They write, "Bolton's nomination is now mixed up in the partisan showdown over judicial appointments, with some Republicans claiming that Democratic opposition is more political than anything else. Bolton's support by Senate Republicans - if it holds - could end up being a vote aimed as much at dominating the Democrats, having less to do with the nominee's fitness to represent the United States in the Byzantine halls of the U.N."
Political Wire: "Jonathan Singer interviews former Sen. Bob Dole on this week's advertised filibuster showdown in the Senate. Said Dole: 'I may be wrong, but I still think there[base ']s going to be some kind of a deal struck where both sides can interpret it the way they want.'"
Dani Newsum asks, "...what Biblical doctrine did the framers base our Constitution on?"
