Grand Old Spending Party
The Cato institute blasts the Republican controlled Congress and President Bush over spending in a new report titled The Grand Old Spending Party: How Republicans Became Big Spenders.

Eisenhower on Social Security
A picture named istilllikeike.jpgJulie with a B posted this quote from Dwight D. Eisenhower yesterday, "'Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you wouldnot hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes that you can do these things. Among them are a few Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or businessman from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid.' --President Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1952"

Thanks to MakesMeRalph for the link.

Update: Here's a link from the comments section of Julie with a B's weblog that places the quote in a letter that Eisenhower wrote to his brother in 1956.

Update: Here's the source from The Presidential Papers of Dwight David Eisenhower.

Update: Here's a nice analysis of the whole thing including the mistakes on the date and the missing reference to H.L. Hunt.

Here's an article on a recent AP/Ipsos poll about Social Security from the AP via the Rocky Mountain News [May 5, 2005, "Poll: Most want no Social Security cuts"]. They write, "The poll, conducted for The Associated Press by Ipsos-Public Affairs, found that 56 percent of respondents are not willing to give up some guaranteed benefits, while 40 percent said they would. Majorities of Democrats, Republicans and independents were opposed to losing any benefits."

NewMexiKen "It's the underlying financial crisis (i.e, the deficit) that's the issue, not Social Security."

Referendum C
Now that Mayor Hickenlooper has persuaded Denver voters to build the new justice center (and remodel the jail) he's focussing on a new project, Referendum C on the fall ballot, according to the Denver Post [May 6, 2005, "On to the Nov. fiscal drama"]. From the article, "Backers of the two state referenda have already begun a similar process of inclusion by working closely with business and civic leaders and leaders from both parties and melding a stellar staff into a campaign organization. Now, local government officials, agricultural organizations, unions, senior citizens, students and other citizens will be courted. As Hickenlooper's latest victory showed, the politics of inclusion can be doubly effective by converting potential adversaries into vital allies."

Filibusters
James Dobson was in Washington D.C. yesterday urging the faithful to pray that Congress end judicial filibusters, according to the Denver Post [May 6, 2005, "Dobson focuses prayer on judicial flap"]. However the money quotes come from Tom DeLay, "'All evil, all sin, and indeed all suffering, is ultimately a product of human pride,' DeLay said in his speech. He later said, 'With God, all things are possible. ... He embraces lowly sinners like you and me, especially me.'"

George Will: "Some Christians should practice the magnanimity of the strong rather than cultivate the grievances of the weak. But many Christians are joining today's scramble for the status of victims. There is much lamentation about various 'assaults' on 'people of faith.' Christians are indeed experiencing some petty insults and indignities concerning things such as restrictions on school Christmas observances. But their persecution complex is unbecoming because it is unrealistic."

Meanwhile Opinions You Should Have reports, "Jack Abramoff, a powerful lobbyist who is himself being investigated for allegations of corruption, was appointed to investigate allegations that Congressman Tom Delay improperly permitted him to pay for airfare."
