Bush (Jeb) for President?
TalkLeft: "Today brought the latest of Jeb Bush's many denials that he's interested in running for the presidency. Even Jeb's father thinks Jeb is a liar."

McInnis for Governor?
Colorado Pols: "In a letter hitting today, former Congressman Scott McInnis asks readers the most popular question so far this year, 'Do you think I should run for Governor?'"

Political Wire: "A report issued by the centrist Democratic group, the Third Way, found that 'support for Republicans begins at much lower income levels than researchers had expected," the Washington Times reports. With white voters, President Bush "got a majority of support beginning at an income threshold of $23,300 -- about $5,000 above the poverty level for a family of four.'"

McConnell for Chief Justice?
Makes Me Ralph: "Michael McConnell, of Denver, might be a Bush Supreme Court Nominee that Democrats can't hold up as "exceptional circumstances." John Farrell, the Denver Post's Washington Bureau Chief, says that McConnell is a conservative that Democrats have approved before on a voice vote. Colorado Law Week says that McConnell is mentioned as a successor if Rehnquist has to step down. However, he badly, badly needs a haircut, otherwise Ralph will look at him and think of Moe Howard."

National Review: "In these circumstances, the best option is a recess appointment. John Bolton deserves to serve at the U.N. None of the many, many arguments advanced against him over the last two months have any merit. And at this time of international flux, the U.S. shouldn't go without an ambassador to the U.N. while Democrats manufacture their newest objection to Bush's nominee. If the White House acts now, it can argue that Bolton had majority support in the Senate, but was blocked by filibustering Democrats. With a recess appointment, Bolton can serve through end of the Senate session in 2006, and there is no reason that he can't be confirmed by the Senate at a later date. The non-scandals of the last few weeks will fade, and the case against Bolton will weaken as he performs - as we have every reason to believe he will - effectively at the world body." Thanks to Blogs for Bush for the link.

Bolton
Josh Marshall: "Steve Soto has an interesting new angle on the Bolton case and why the White House may be holding on so tightly to the NSA reports information."

Washington Post: "Two days after winning reelection last fall, President Bush declared that he had earned plenty of 'political capital, and now I intend to spend it.' Six months later, according to Republicans and Democrats alike, his bank account has been significantly drained. In the past week alone, the Republican-led House defied his veto threat and passed legislation promoting stem cell research; Senate Democrats blocked confirmation, at least temporarily, of his choice for U.N. ambassador; and a rump group of GOP senators abandoned the president in his battle to win floor votes for all of his judicial nominees."

Coffman for Treasurer?
Colorado Pols: "Mike Coffman filed late last week for his eventual run as Colorado's next Secretary of State (unless we need an interim appointment if/when Davidson moves on). He is currently the only candidate filed."

Colorado Pols will also have a Q&A with State Senator Dan Grossman tomorrow. They think he may run for Attorney General.

San Juan Forest is 100
A picture named trooseveltsmall.jpgHappy Birthday to the San Juan National Forest. From the Cortez Journal, "Friday is the centennial anniversary of the San Juan National Forest, an event marked by the June 3, 1905, creation of the forest by President Theodore Roosevelt."

HB 1070 Veto
Governor Owens vetoed HB 1070 yesterday, according to the Rocky Mountain News [June 1, 2005, "Water bill gets caught in wash"]. From the article, "The water conservation bill did several things, including invalidating restrictive covenants that prohibited or limited the use of xeriscaping, or that required turf grass. It also outlawed irrigation on public facilities or projects from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and gave water conservation projects a higher priority for certain funds. Owens said the bill was 'debated and passed on a false pretense' that it would not cost the state money. Several departments indicated they would incur significant costs if they had to limit or change their watering times."

This veto will impact negotiations all over the state. West Slope interests, properly, point to a lack of serious conservation efforts along the Front Range when they sit down to talk water. It's true that Denver and other Front Range rights holders are not taking as much water as the law entitles them to. However, if they did, they would dry up many of the headwaters streams in the process.
