Supremes
The Moderate Voice: "When the Supreme Court today handed down split decisions on how and whether the ten commandments can be displayed it also handed down something else: a foreshadowing of a monumental battle royal over Supreme Court nominations ... The reason: the court reached a decision that left it (and future courts) plenty of wiggle room on this issue in the future. But its ruling also underscored the fragility of the court's political center."

Guide to Women Contractors
Left in the West: "The U.S. Women's Chamber of Commerce has found that even though women own over 35% of all firms in the U.S., overall women-owned firms still get below 5% of all federal contracts. Consequently, women are losing billions of dollars every year in federal contracting opportunities. The U.S. Women's Chamber of Commerce published its first Guide to Women Contractors, which serves as a listing of women-owned businesses for local, state and federal prime contractors and large corporate buyers to ensure that women have access to lucrative government and private contracting markets. As if women already didn't have enough reasons to vote for a change."
Colorado Luis: "The anti-war movement has to walk a fine line. We should say it is true that the U.S. has accomplished its goals for the invasion, and it is time for the democratic factions to get their act together without U.S. help ... But at the same time we need to try to ensure that the ongoing recruiting problems and setbacks on the ground in Iraq are laid at the feet of the right wing and not used as a justification for keeping our troops over there. Can it be done? Well, I am open to suggestions."
Mt. Virtus: "Only a couple days after being 'elected' as the new President of Iran, hard-liner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad stops the charade and announces that his country plans to reconstitute its nuclear program."

Southerners for President?
Oval Office 2008: "The ten Southerners that Rudin identifies as being on most people's 2008 long-list are: Frist, Allen, Bush, Rice, Barbour, Huckabee, Gingrich, Edwards, Warner and Bredesen. If you wanted, you could also add Clark, Sanford and even Al Gore."
Political Wire: "'Three days after confirming that he is testing the presidential waters,' Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) said that people are 'hyperventilating over the subject of his political future,' the Boston Globe reports."

Raise Taxes on Rental Cars and Lodging?
Denver voters may get a chance to raise taxes on rental cars and hotel rooms this November, according to the Rocky Mountain News editorial staff [June 27, 2005, "Tourism, yes, but without the tax hikes"]. From the editorial, "It's not fair and it's not right: Hike the taxes on just a couple of tourist-related industries in order to benefit all businesses that cater to tourists. But that's exactly what the Denver Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau would like to do. The bureau is preparing a November referendum for the city ballot that would boost the tax on rental cars and hotel rooms in order to raise an extra $5.8 million a year. The money would be used to promote the city's attractions around the nation."
Here's a link to past coverage of the issue from Coyote Gulch.
