Bolton
Stygius: "Looks like Bill Frist's maneuver yesterday to pressure the Democrats before another cloture vote has failed badly, despite having an amiable John McCain at his side. McCain was there to provide photogenic cover for Frist's sophistries, 'moving goals posts' and the like, which were so clearly idiotic that McCain wouldn't even support them after the press conference -- merely calling for an up-or-down vote. Steve Clemons says the maneuver may have actually backfired, solidifying the Democrats' position and pushing Senator Pryor towards supporting a No-cloture vote."

Blogs for Bush: "Those who read this blog on a regular basis know that I take a rather dim view of the United Nations. My main gripe about the organization is that it tends to put freedom on par with tyranny - in the General Assembly, unfree States like China get to vote right alongside free States like the United States...Given that, what we need at the UN is a strong voice who will not mince words and will demand deep reforms of that corrupt and moribund organization. In yet another irony of world history, it is John Bolton, a man selected by President Bush who is reviled in the UN on a regular basis, who is most likely to save that organization and breath new life into it."

Federal Dough for Colorado?
Durango Herald: "Money for Colorado water projects is starting to flow out of Congress, but one representative worries that too much remains dammed up in Washington. U.S. Rep. John Salazar wants to examine the creation of a new federal trust fund for water treatment - similar to the fund that states use to build highways."

Steamboat Pilot & Today: "A group of parties concerned about upper Yampa basin water rights are working toward a settlement with applicants for 1,250 acre-feet of water rights."

Pueblo Chieftain: "Which came first: Water or growth? Water planners for Colorado Springs maintain they do not set policy for growth, and the high cost of water acquisition has been a matter of contention for years. Ray Nixon, who led Colorado Springs Utilities during its expansion in the explosion growth period of the 1950s and 1960s, was chastised by taxpayers for the high price tags on transmountain water projects, according to Marshall Sprague's history 'Newport in the Rockies.'"

Vail Trail: "Norton ruled in favor of lower basin states, but more problems are sure to come. In the 83 years since representatives of the seven Colorado River Basin states first divvied up the river's water, there's always been enough to meet the states' needs. Not anymore. A relatively wet winter has done little to offset five years of the worst drought in the region's recorded history, and Lake Powell and Lake Mead, the river system's 'backup batteries,' are at less than half of their combined capacity."

Warner for President?
Oval Office 2008: "Some decisive moves from outgoing Virginia Democratic Governor Mark Warner reported here by the Washington Post. Warner 'is forming a federal political action committee and has hired a former top aide to then-Vice President Al Gore to advise him on national politics,' the Post reports. Not obviously the moves of a man about to leave the political scene."

Western Democrat: "Over at Tidepool, they're running a syndicated op-ed by Dan Kemmis - the former speaker of the Montana House - in which he calls for a Western primary."

Western Democrat: "The Governor of Utah, Jon Huntsman (R), says he's going to join Governor Bill Richardson (D-NM) in the fight for a Western primary in 2008."

Coyote Gulch wonders if we could get Ralph to call up his friend, "Native Texan Governor Bill Owens" and ask him to support the effort.

Political Wire: "E.J. Dionne makes the case for a John McCain-Jeb Bush Republican ticket in the 2008 presidential election."

Political Wire: "The thought of an alliance between Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and media mogul Rupert Murdoch -- 'two of the most powerful and guarded figures in the world -- is beginning to whet the appetites of the chattering classes,' the New York Observer reports. For Clinton, 'it would be the perfection of an art that she and her husband have practiced for more than a decade: keeping your enemies close.'"

Bull Moose: "The next time the President is in Texas he might take a trip from Crawford down I-35 and pay a visit to the LBJ Library in Austin. Once there, he should listen to the tapes of the conversations between President Johnson and Defense Secretary Robert McNamara from around 1966. He might note a striking similarity between the Vietnam reports from McNamara and the assessments he is getting from Rummy on Iraq. Bush suffers from the early stages of Johnsonitis - a chronic inability to level with the American people. It is far too long before the next election to predict doom for the GOP. But clearly, the party's afterglow from the past election is gone. At the moment, the President is not a lame duck, but rather appears like a befuddled donkey of days gone by."

Cancel Service Call?
Here's the dilemma. Coyote Gulch's cable was down from yesterday morning until sometime during the night. Comcast doesn't know of any outages in the service area. They assign a technician for this afternoon. Should we keep the appointment, insist on a new cable modem, or cancel? Tech calls cost the provider. Outages piss us off. Non-repeatable problems are like chasing ghosts.

Richardson for President?
The Hill: "New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson is pushing to increase the weight of Western states with fast-growing Hispanic populations in the 2008 Democratic presidential primary, which would give him a major advantage over other candidates vying to be the alternative to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) three years from now." Bring on the westerners. Thanks to the Western Democrat for the link.
