Eminent Domain
A picture named columbinessmall.jpgSome family folk and Democrats are chagrined at the party responses to events this week.

Coyote Gulch recommends that the players vacate Washington D.C. for a visit back home. Out here on the Rooftop of America the visit should last until the columbines are past their prime. We recommend a saunter up Sunshine Peak. You'll be entertained by the meadows on the way up and won't even feel the climb.

Back to the politics. The constant bickering is so unproductive. They should be rushing to pass legislation to lay out the will of the people on the issue of eminent domain.

It looks like Holland and Hart are going to get into the discussion around Guantanamo Bay.

Fort Collins Coloradan: "State Republican Party Chairman Bob Martinez on Wednesday called on Colorado Congressman Tom Tancredo and other lawmakers to 'back off' of their criticism of President Bush's immigration policy." Thanks to MakesMeRalph for the link.

Colorado Luis: "One of the main slurs against people like me who think that there should be widespread access to citizenship for people who have productively lived in this country for years without the benefit of official paperwork is that all we are trying to do is pump up the numbers of the supposedly monolithic Latino voting bloc for the Democrats. I've always maintained that there is no truth to that because it is the new citizens who are the most conservative. "

Bull Moose: "The Moose asks whether Rove will be Durbinized?"

Blogs for Bush: "Liberal Democrats and lefty bloggers alike are fuming over Karl Rove's criticism of how Democrats responded to 9/11... An objective look at the facts will show not only that Rove's comments last night were accurate, but also long overdue."

Political Wire: "Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R), 'who has acknowledged that he is considering a presidential run, said his wife's health is his main concern as he weighs his political future,' the AP reports."

Mt. Virtus: "Sorry - but that type of apology isn't good enough for my wife when I've done her wrong ("I'm sorry, dear, if I said anything that might have offended you"), and it sure isn't good enough for a United States Senator whose outlandish statement has become a propaganda tool for our enemy and have put our servicemen and women at greater risk."

Western Democrat: "More interesting to me than a lot of what is going in in New Mexico, Colorado and Montana is how the Democratic Party in Idaho is coming back from not even having fielded a candidate for the Senate seat last year. That's almost like giving up on a Governor's race. Not quite that bad, but its pretty bad."

Political Wire: "An EMILY's List report finds that Republican support among women 'has dropped significantly since November, creating an opening for Democratic and female candidates in next year's midterm elections,' Roll Call reports. 'Among women who supported President Bush six months ago, just 66 percent said they will definitely support Republican Congressional candidates next year while one-third said they will either vote Democratic or are undecided, with the bulk of them being undecided.'"

Western Strategy?
MakesMeRalph: "There is really a great story in the New York Times today concerning surface owner's rights and how it plays into a Democratic Western Strategy."

Western Democrat: "We've talked a lot about the Western style - especially as employed by Western Democrats. Looking for something else tonight, I stumbled on this great 2003 column by B.C. Silvia..."

Bull Moose: "The Moose warns Democrats not to identify with defeat. These are difficult days for the GOP. The Bush Administration is losing its grip and appears untethered to reality...Although the public's perception of Iraq is changing, Democrats cannot become the anti-war party - they must be smart hawks. Even at the apex of the Vietnam war in 1968, the American people elected the most hawkish candidate. The combined Nixon and Wallace vote formed an overwhelming majority."

Scott Goldstein: "Being on the left represents a proud tradition of standing up for people without a voice. It represents a system in which the rulers = the ruled. We are literally in the midst of the second American revolution. Conservative policies favor those that create them, both the political and financial upper class. But progressive policies favor society, and a shared community."

Q&A With Senator Allard
Colorado Pols: "We are happy to bring you another Q&A, this time with Senator Wayne Allard. Senator Allard has answered your questions over the course of the past two weeks, and the Q&A posted below features the complete, unedited answers to those questions."

Conservation or profit?
Denver Water customers are not responding to the the utility's plea to use more water. This summer, the first in several years with an actual runoff in the high country, Denver Water dropped all restrictions except watering lawns during the hot part of the day. Still, water customers continue to cut back.

The Denver Post reports that the punishment reward for conservation means higher prices [June 23, 2005, "Water officials struggling with shrinking income"]. From the article, "Denver Water, faced with dwindling revenues from a drop in consumption, might have to boost rates by as much as 45 percent by 2008 or cut costs by $63 million, utility officials said Wed nesday...A combination of smaller rate hikes and budget cuts is more likely to help compensate for dwindling revenues resulting from record lows in water use, with consumption dropping 26 percent since 2000. A rate increase of 8 percent in each of the next three years is already planned. The worst-case scenario would add about 20 percent."

Here's the coverage from the Rocky Mountain News [June 23, 2005, "Water gluttons may pay"]. From the article, "If water sales continue to lag, the giant agency, which has a $240.4 million operating budget, could face budget cuts of $25 million in 2007 and $38 million in 2008, or be forced to seek massive rate increases...Denver Water Manager Chips Barry said the agency would likely have to cut budgets and increase rates to ensure it can survive even as it encourages its customers to use less water. The agency has increased rates 8 percent this year, and officials had said they would likely do so again next year. But even that increase won't be enough to meet its financial obligations and maintain required financial reserves, LaFrance said."
