Fountain Creek Sediment
A picture named wmdsmall.jpg Pueblo Chieftain: "Fountain Creek flows through Pueblo south toward the confluence with the Arkansas River. More development is increasing sediment in the waterway, both through increased water use and runoff from pavement."

Coyote Gulch can help out Colorado Springs. Here's a link to the DenverGov page for Denver's Stormwater Quality Control Plan. The unofficial Wastewater Management Division motto is, "It may be crap to you but it's our bread and butter!"

Tancredo for President?
MakesMeRalph is pointing to Tenneseans for Tancredo. Someone named Tennessee Republican posted this in the Coyote Gulch comments: "Cong. Tancredo is a true patriot. I hope he runs for president. The American people are fed up with illegal immigration. I want our borders secured and enforced. I do not want any form of amnesty for illegal aliens." The Congressman has a fan club back there.

Bull Moose: "These folks are only playing into the hands of the Rovians and the Delayicans. Michael Moore could have orchestrated this event. By promoting this type of conspiracy mongering, the opposition to the war simply discredits itself. While W. suffers from Johnsonitis, some lefties suffer from Mooreitis - an inclination to engage in conspiracy when the facts will suffice."

Political Wire: "'Some conservative activists are suggesting that a controversial new biography about Sen. Hillary Clinton will help dash any presidential aspirations she might have,' the New York Times reports. 'The financing for a conservative Web site that is promoting the book comes partly from Richard Mellon Scaife, a longtime foe of the Clintons who tapped his fortune in the 1990's to finance a project at The American Spectator magazine to dig up damaging information about the couple.'"

Boston Globe: "Governor Mitt Romney yesterday endorsed a grass-roots effort to pass a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage in Massachusetts in 2008, abandoning his support for what he called a ''muddied' compromise measure that would also ban gay marriages but allow gays to enter into civil unions. Romney, who is courting conservative voters for a possible presidential run in 2008, said the newly proposed ban would give voters a chance to consider a 'clean, straightforward, unambiguous amendment' that does not include civil unions."

Luis Toro - Beauprez Using the Pete Wilson Strategy?
Colorado Luis: "I think we need to consider the possibility that this so-called 'gaffe' was part of a very intentional political strategy for 2006, which I'll call the Pete Wilson strategy after the governor of California who won re-election in 1994 in a campaign that was viewed as virulently anti-Latino and anti-Asian-American. That campaign was based on the idea that if Wilson could pick up 60% of the white vote, he would win no matter what. He picked up 61% and won. If you don't believe me, check out Pat Buchanan's argument praising Wilson's 1994 strategy and arguing that future GOP victories in California and nationally depend on mobilizing the white vote on the issue of immigration."

Dani Newsum: "Beauprez, quick to get in the way of a matter in which he cannot possibly be of any (good) use, is sponsoring a bill that would cut off U.S. aid to any country that puts terms on extraditions that Beauprez doesn't like. Last year Mexico received about $72 million in aid from the U.S.; Mexico is also one of the U.S.' largest trading partners."

Bolton
Stygius: "Senator Frist, who was threatening to hold a cloture vote on the John Bolton nomination today, is instead threatening to hold the vote on Monday now. His threats are obviously having a huge effect. Quite the parliamentarian, our Dr. Frist. This week's exercise, accusing the Democrats of obstructionism, blew up in his face given White House obstructionism. Thus, I don't see what more Frist has to bargain with that will make losing on Monday worthwhile."

Immigration
Immigration will be an issue in the 2006 Governor's race, according to the Denver Post [June 17, 2005, "Migrants a key issue for election"]. From the article, "Latinos - especially those from Mexico - make up one of the fastest growing groups in Colorado. Republicans and Democrats are stepping up efforts to recruit Latino voters."

Colorado Pols: "Today is the final day to submit questions for former Denver District Attorney and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bill Ritter."

MakesMeRalph: "Oh, he may not know it yet, but he's finished in Colorado politics." Ralph thinks the Bob Beauprez's gaff over "Mexican Time" and his vote on the Patriot Act this week is sounding the death knell for the congressman's gubernatorial plans.

Dillon Should Fill and Spill
A picture named dilloncoloradosmall.jpgDillon Reservoir is expected to fill and spill this week, according to the Denver Post [June 17, 2005, "Dry times are gone at Dillon Reservoir"]. According to the article, the latest readings on Denver Water's reservoirs are as follows: Antero - 22%; Elevenmile = 101%; Cheesman - 100%; Marston - 98%; Chatfield - 99%; Dillon - 97%; Williams Fork - 95%; Wolford Mountain - 55%; Gross - 100%; Ralston - 98%.

Referenda C and D
The Colorado Transportion Commission is spending dough they won't have unless Referendums C and D are approved on the fall ballot, according to the Rocky Mountain News [June 17, 2005, "Panel finalizes transportation projects list"]. From the article, "The commission then endorsed the package of 57 projects as well as Referendums C and D, the two tax-related ballot initiatives the legislature sent to voters this year to address state budget and spending issues." The spreadsheet is a nice touch.

The Rocky has a list of the proposed projects here and you can download the details in a spreadsheet here.

Here's the coverage from the Denver Post [June 17, 2005, "TABOR looms over governor's budget forecast"].

From today's Denver Post online, "Denver school board members on Thursday approved official ballot language for a $25 million pay-for-performance plan that the district plans to put before voters this fall. If Denver voters approve the Pro-Comp plan, Denver Public Schools teachers would eventually be paid based on performance evaluations and the 'hard to staff' schools they teach in. Already some DPS board members have been working on the campaign for the fall, said board member Elaine Gantz Berman."

Guerin Green - North Denver News: "It looks as if Denver voters may get a chance to raise taxes twice in November, having just had the pleasure in May. The Denver Public Schools will likely be out for a mill-levy boost for ProComp, which will take a little selling after the disaster of voter-approved and funded School Revitalization. Then, the Denver Metro Convention and Visitor's Bureau will seek to hike lodging and car rental taxes to fund their marketing efforts. Now spending $5.8 million of largely other people's money to market Denver has some appeal. But, as ever, there is more to the story."
