Major Coffman
Mt. Virtus: "I must say that Treasurer - no, make that Major - Coffman is a rare breed: one of a handful of politicians I've met willing to put greater interests ahead of his own personal and political ambitions. I suggest to you that he should be looked at as a role model. We can worry about the 2006 election later - Coffman is getting ready to play a key role in a larger and more significant mission now."
Mike Littwin writes about Coffman in his column in today's Rocky Mountain News [May 7, 2005, "Littwin: Coffman does it his way in going to Iraq"]. From the opinion piece, "At age 50, state treasurer Mike Coffman is risking everything, starting with life and limb, to rejoin the Marines and go to Iraq to help set up local and provincial governments. It's important work."
Coyote Gulch urges certain political junkies to put aside their cynicism in this matter. You can impugn Coffman's motives when he gets back to Colorado and runs for Secretary of State.

YourHub.com
John Temple's column today deals with the launch of YourHub.com, the Rocky's experiment with citizen driver jounalism. Here's the link to Denver's part of the website.
Alas, Coyote Gulch will not be creating a YourHub.com presence. They are asking for too much personal information and the application does not work well on my Macintosh. I couldn't decipher their terms and conditions because they did not render correctly. Mr. Temple your staff needs to do a bit more testing to reflect the inclusive attitude you're expounding.
It's a great idea though. Good luck!

Runoff
This year's runoff in the San Juans should be the best we've seen for years, according to the Rocky Mountain News [May 7, 2005, "River runners revel in runoff"]. From the article, "Snowpack in the mountains feeding the Dolores River is 148 percent of average. Snowpack in the Rio Grande drainage is 162 percent of average - the highest readings in 10 years for each river...The Dolores River is expected to flow at 123 percent of average through July, and the San Juan River near Pagosa Springs is expected to flow at 152 percent, extending the prime river sports season by weeks."
Meanwhile the Rocky is reporting that the city of Boulder will not impose watering restrictions on residents this year [May 7, 2005, "No watering restrictions in Boulder this summer"]. From the article, "The snowpack is at 104 percent of normal along the portion of the Continental Divide west of Boulder where the city draws its water. Reservoirs are expected to fill by late May or early June."
Coyote Gulch is ecstatic that Colorado's drought has been declared over by the water utilities that have water to sell. Next they'll be telling us that we no longer live in a dryland environment.
Howling At A Waning Moon: "The new rule weakening protection for national forest roadless areas will put drinking water sources at risk, waste taxpayers' money, and leave fewer wild places where families can enjoy a quiet, natural experience, said REP America, the national grassroots organization of Republicans for Environmental Protection."
