A picture named moaburanium.jpgColorado Water

Well I'll be darned if it doesn't look like the downstream rights owners on the Colorado River might win two days in a row. An email from the Rocky has this blurb about radioactive junk on the river in Utah: "Gov't proposes moving nuke waste in Utah The Energy Department on Wednesday proposed to move a huge pile of radioactive waste away from the banks of the Colorado River - a victory for environmentalists and Western politicians who fear the debris could poison the Southwest's major source of drinking water."

Coyote Gulch wonders if it could be the big mound on the west side of the Colorado south of Moab?

Weblogs

Coyote Gulch had a great time talking blogging with Lynn Pressnall tonight. Lynn works for Councilwoman Marcia Johnson. Here's the link to Marcia's Musings.

The plan around the District 5 is to ease into blogging slowly.

Lynn chose software from KnowledgeMessenger to manage email lists. They've expanded into weblogs now.

The 'Ol Coyote helped Lynn set up a bloglines account. I guess you could say that the talk leaned more toward RSS over blogging. Welcome to the world of aggregators.

2008 Presidential Election

Western Democrat: "The Associated Press is reporting this short list of putative presidential contenders. Only one Western Democrat among them..."

Iraqi Election

Juan Cole: "The Iraqi National Assembly is set to announce the formation of a presidential council on Wednesday, selecting Kurdish leader Jalal Talabani as president, Adil Abdul Mahdi as a vice president, and Ghazi al-Yawar as the other vice president. Abdul Mahdi is a member of the Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq who has gravitated toward a faith in the free market (he is rumored to have been a Maoist in his youth). Yawir is the current president, and is from the powerful Shamar tribe."

Social Security

Josh Marshall: "The Social Security Trust Fund is now at about $1.7 trillion. And President Bush says there's no way that can or will be paid back. But just in his first term he's racked up about two-thirds that much money in new debt. And he'll easily exceed that number in his second term. And that'll amount to maybe a couple trillion dollars that even President Bush concedes will be paid back to all those bond purchasors here and abroad. If we hadn't gone on President Bush's red ink binge, that would be more than enough cash to pay back all the money owed to the Social Security Administration."

Denver November 2006 Election

Will Mayor Hickenlooper run for governor? Peter Blake speculates in his column in today's Rocky Mountain News, that republicans could use the vote this May on the Denver Justice Center to convince him not to [April 6, 2005, "Blake: Jail a chance to trip Hick"]. Blake writes, "They could start by crawling improbably into bed with the social liberals who have been leading the opposition to the city's proposed justice center. And that, according to a story elsewhere in today's paper, is what they seem to be doing. The mayor has staked much of his considerable political capital on public approval of the $378 million project at the May 3 election. If it's turned down, as the last proposed jail was in 2001, it would slow if not stop his electoral momentum."

I didn't find the article Blake talks about in today's online addition.

Denver May 2005 Election

Fundraising numbers are in for the May election and so far proponents of the new Denver Justice Center are far ahead of opponents, according to the Rocky Mountain News [April 6, 2005, "Jail foes raise just $20"]. From the article, "Backers of Denver's justice center proposal have raised $447,900 in contributions, according to campaign finance reports filed Tuesday. Opponents have raised $20."

Here's the coverage from the Denver Post [April 6, 2005, "Jail backers winning the race for funds"]. From the article, "Ciruli predicts that roughly 50,000 voters will cast ballots on May 3. That would mean Citizens for a Safe Denver will end up spending more than $10 per voter in its campaign, he said."
