2004 Presidential Transition

Stygius: "John Bolton's nomination hearing for UN Ambassador was scheduled for Thursday, but has been postponed to next week. Republican Senator Lincoln Chafee (RI) has signalled that he may vote No on Bolton. This would split the Foreign Relations Committee 9-9, essentially killing the nomination."

2008 Presidential Election

Western Democrat: "The Associated Press is reporting that (New Mexico) Governor Richardson is planning a June trip to New Hampshire."

Denver November 2005 Election

Denver may ask the voters for a de-Brucing of revenues this fall, according to the Denver Post [April 7, 2005, "Denver may seek relief on TABOR"]. From the article, "Denver officials might ask voters in November to allow the city to keep roughly $7 million in taxes collected in excess of state limits. Fueling interest in that possibility is a gap of at least $26 million and possibly as much as $35 million in the proposed 2006 budget that Denver officials must find a way to plug...(Chief of Staff Michael) Bennet ruled out furlough days - mandatory days off without pay - for city employees. The furlough days imposed last year were a one-time measure that hurt morale, he said."

Here's the coverage from the Rocky Mountain News [April 7, 2005, "'06 budget crunch"]

Colorado Water

Denver Post: "The Department of Energy on Wednesday announced plans to relocate a 12 million-ton pile of radioactive waste that sits about 750 feet away from the Colorado River in southeastern Utah." [April 7, 2005, "Nuclear waste near Moab to be moved"]

Here's a link to the Coyote Gulch post on the subject yesterday. The satellite image is from Google and shows the Moab valley with the uranium operation to the southwest.

Denver November 2006 Election

Mayor Hickenlooper has all but ruled out a run at governor, according to the Denver Post [April 7, 2005, "Mayor won't say never on governorship"]. The Post quotes the mayor yesterday, "I honestly don't think I'm going to run. I'm not looking at it. I'm not investigating it. I'm just focusing on running the city."

From the article, "Nineteen months before the November 2006 gubernatorial election, former Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter and Cherry Hills Village entrepreneur Rutt Bridges have made public their interest in seeking the Democratic nomination. Both have their liabilities. Ritter, who opposes abortion and declined to prosecute Denver cops in alleged police brutality cases, would be likely to face criticism from abortion-rights and minority groups. And Bridges, who never has served in public office, probably would face questions about his qualifications to govern the state. Other Democrats, such as House Speaker Andrew Romanoff and Senate President Joan Fitz-Gerald, also have been named as possible contenders."

Colorado Pols is in the middle of the draft Hickenlooper gang.

Update: Draft Hick writes, in the comments, "ColoradoPols is not in the middle of the Draft Hick gang. We have no idea who is behind ColoradoPols."

They were right to call me for what I wrote. I meant to say that Colorado Pols were also urging the Mayor to run, along with many others.
