2004 Presidential Election
Mike Littwin weighs in on the choice of John Edwards in his column in today's Rocky Mountain News [July 8, 2004, "Littwin: Edwards adds energy, but it's Kerry's race"]. He writes, "No, the problem is that Kerry has yet to identify himself as anything other than the Anti-Bush - a role Michael Moore plays much more convincingly - with no particular vision for America other than it will be Bush-free. Oh, I almost forgot. He also says at every stop that he wants the international (yawn) community to go to Iraq, meaning the debacle will be, well, internationalized...It's clear what Edwards brings to the ticket, just as clear as the fact that Kerry had no choice but to bring him on. He brings passion. He brings clarity. He brings the bite back to sound bite. I saw Edwards first in New Hampshire last August speaking from a gazebo in North Conway. The gazebo was half-filled, and his speech, though appealing, was the unheard tree falling in the forest (or, in this case, in a forest of North Conway outlet stores). By the time the race was ending, though, Edwards was a rock star, having to scream above adoring crowds. (Fortunately, unlike Colin Powell, he didn't try to sing.) What stood between Edwards and a real chance for the Democratic nomination was the sense that he couldn't be elected. Now, strangely, the guy who couldn't be elected is being recruited to help the electable guy get, well, elected."
Update: Yahoo!: "The AP-Ipsos poll found Bush slightly leading Kerry 49 percent to 45 percent with independent candidate Ralph Nader (news - web sites) at 3 percent. The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. A month ago, the Bush-Kerry matchup was tied and Nader had 6 percent." Thanks to Blogs for Bush for the link.
Update: Senator Kerry leads President Bush 48% to 46% according to a new Zogby International poll. MakesMeRalph would remind us that in his experience Zogby has never called a race correctly.
