2004 Presidential Election
The Rocky Mountain News was on hand to cover Senator John Kerry's stop yesterday in Denver [July 24, 2004, "Birthplace bash"]. From the article, "But the rally in a rock venue was more drowsy than rousing, with Kerry giving a long speech to about 3,500 die-hard Democrats crammed into a hot and stuffy Fillmore Auditorium. After standing outside for hours under cloudy skies, the crowd had to clear airport-like security checks before waiting another 11/2 hours for the candidates to appear. The campaign had planned to hold the first stop of its America's Freedom Trail trip in Aurora at the former Fitzsimons Army Hospital, where Kerry was born in 1943, but moved it to an indoor venue because of rain. Still, people circled the blocks around the Colfax theater, waiting to see the 'two Johns' they hope will replace President Bush. Supporters showed their spirit in T-shirts, with those '. . . for Kerry' including Catholics, veterans and union members." The Rocky quotes Kerry as saying, "Now, I'm not one to read into things, ladies and gentlemen, but guess which wing of the hospital the maternity ward was in? Ladies and gentlemen, you got it. I'm not making this up, I promise. I was born in the west wing!"
