Andrew Sullivan: "No idea whether this helps or hurts. Probably helps, right? It may come down to second-choices among the candidates who don't make it to 15 percent. Clinton lags among them."

Captain's Quarters: "Ron Paul's supporters are seeing red after Fox News decided to exclude their candidate from the next presidential debate. ABC also plans to whittle down the participants in the next debate but will wait for the Iowa caucus to make clear who should get the invitations. The exclusion comes after Paul raised $19 million in the fourth quarter, the second-best GOP total for the year."

Opinions You Should Have:

Today in Iowa, Mike Huckabee told reporters "enough is enough" and denounced negative campaigning. Huckabee, who recently fashioned a strident negative campaign ad about rival Mitt Romney, said it was "about time I stopped this viscous campaign of negative attack ads that I have been running," and derided himself as a "detestable fearmonger." He also labelled himself a "pandering schizophrenic."

"Mike Huckabee is about standing on Mike Huckabee's qualifications for President and Mike Huckabee's record, and he is not about pointing out his opponents' disgusting failures and ineptitudes -- of which there are many -- in order to gain the nation's highest office," Huckabee explained. Gesturing to a negative ad he was running locally, he added, "I reject this Mike Huckabee and his evil, negative campaigning ways."

A spokesman for Huckabee said that Huckabee would continue to run attack ads against his opponents, but noted that they would now conclude with the admonition, "My name is Mike Huckabee, and I strongly disapprove of this ad."

Political Wire: "Political Wire got an advance look at a new Strategic Vision poll in Iowa that shows Sen. Barack Obama leading the Democratic presidential race with 32% support, followed by John Edwards at 29% and Sen. Hillary Clinton at 27%. On the Republican side, Mitt Romney leads with 30%, followed by Mike Huckabee at 28%; Sen. John McCain at 16% and Fred Thompson at 13%."

Political Wire: "The new Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby tracking survey in Iowa of likely caucus goers finds the Democratic presidential race tightening. Sen. Hillary Clinton leads with 30%, trailed by John Edwards at 26%, and Sen. Barack Obama also at 26%. For all intents and purposes, the race is a statistical tie. Among likely Republican caucus goers, Mike Huckabee leads with 29%, followed by Mitt Romney at 27%, Sen. John McCain at 13%, Fred Thompson at 8%, Rudy Giuliani at 7%, and Rep. Ron Paul at 7%."

Here's a look back at the day before the Iowa caucuses from four years ago on Coyote Gulch.

This year is different. John Edwards is the only repeat and Barack Obama is pulling ahead but things are still close.

Here's the link to the latest poll from The Des Moines Register. For the Democrats it's Obama 32%, Clinton 25% and Edwards 24%. Republicans are Huckabee 32% and Romney 26% with both McCain (13%) and Giuliani (5%) well behind.
