Captain's Quarters: "Yesterday, I wrote that John McCain has a legitimate claim to conservatism in a significant part of his legislative history, in response to claims of demonization from Michael Medved against a large portion of the conservative punditry. In another essay, I agreed with EJ Dionne that McCain had to find a way to win conservatives in the upcoming closed primaries without looking like a flip-flopper, but I disagreed that he would have to sell his soul to do so. A change in tone would make up most of the lost ground."
Politcal Wire: "The latest Quinnipiac poll in New Jersey offers more evidence that Rudy Giuliani's presidential campaign is in total free fall. After leading Republicans in the Garden State for the last year, Sen. John McCain has now overtaken Giuliani and leads 29% to 26%, followed by Mitt Romney at 14% and Mike Huckabee at 9%...In the Democratic race, Sen. Hillary Clinton leads Sen. Barack Obama, 49% to 32%, with John Edwards at 10%."
Political Wire: "Sen. Barack Obama is almost 20 points ahead of Sen. Hillary Clinton in South Carolina among likely Democratic voters, according to the latest Reuters/C-CPAN/Zogby poll. Obama gets 43% support, followed by Clinton at 25% and John Edwards at 15%."
Political Wire: "Sen. John McCain and Sen. Hillary Clinton 'hold double-digit leads among the state's most reliable voters heading into Arizona's presidential preference election,' according to an Arizona State University/KAET-TV poll. Among Republicans, McCain leads with 41% support, followed by Mitt Romney at just 18%. Among Democrats, Clinton has 45% support, followed by Sen. Barack Obama at 24%. Nonetheless, many voters remain undecided -- 19% among Republicans, and 21% among Democrats -- for Arizona's Feb. 5 primary elections."
