Daily Kos: "This was supposed to be the year that Democrats went West. So far that's amounted to two questions about Yucca Mountain in the Democratic 'Western' debate a few months ago in Nevada, and moving up the Nevada caucus to next week. In addition, the DNC convention will be held in Denver, because, as Howard Dean said in explaining the decision: 'There is no question that the West is important to the future of the Democratic Party. The recent Democratic gains in the West exemplify the principle that when we show up and ask for people's votes and talk about what we stand for, we can win in any part of the country.'"

Juan Cole: "Several Sunni, Shiite and secular political parties have come together in a new pact aimed at challenging the dominant coalition of the Kurdistan Alliance and the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (ISCI). They appear to aim at blocking the formation of a Shiite regional confederacy in the South. They also want to stop oil-rich Kirkuk Province from going to the Kurdistan Regional Authority. In March, the 18 month delay in the implementation of the Shiite region (comprising 8 provinces) will end."

Andrew Sullivan: "...the passage of the law allowing for more Sunnis and former Baathists to take part in the national government's structure is new. It's a genuine success of the kind we were once promised. It's the first actual data point that suggests some kind of reconciliation may be possible in Baghdad. Nonetheless, I don't think it's churlish to be cautious. There are many, many caveats in the press, let alone in the Byzantine and treacherous currents of Iraqi politics. There's a chance that reigniting these issues at the center could spark more violence in the regions."

Captain's Quarters: "A solution in search of a problem found a judge in search of some understanding of the concept of private property and free speech. Both converged in Las Vegas through the efforts of Dennis Kucinich to force his way into the NBC Democratic debate. A Las Vegas judge ruled in favor of Kucinich."

Poltical Wire: "A new SurveyUSA poll in Florida finds four Republican presidential candidates essentially tied in their primary race. Sen. John McCain leads with 25%, followed by Rudy Giuliani with 23%, Mike Huckabee with 18% and Mitt Romney with 18%...With no delegates at stake, Democrats have generally ignored Florida. The poll shows Sen. Hillary Clinton ahead of Sen. Barack Obama by 33 points, 56% to 23%."

Political Wire: "According to a new Politico/CNN/Los Angeles Times poll in California, Sen. Hillary Clinton holds a "solid lead" over Sen. Barack Obama in the nation's largest state, 47% to 31%, followed by John Edwards at 10%. In the GOP race, Sen. John McCain has 'a narrow edge' over Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani, 20% to 16% to 14%. Mike Huckabee is fourth with 13%."

Paul Krugman (via the NYT): "On the Democratic side, John Edwards, although never the front-runner, has been driving his party's policy agenda. He's done it again on economic stimulus: last month, before the economic consensus turned as negative as it now has, he proposed a stimulus package including aid to unemployed workers, aid to cash-strapped state and local governments, public investment in alternative energy, and other measures."

Political Wire: "The latest Reno Gazette-Journal poll in Nevada shows a very close Democratic presidential race with Sen. Barack Obama leading with 32% support, followed by Sen. Hillary Clinton at 30% and John Edwards at 27%. In the mostly-ignored Republican race, Sen. John McCain leads with 22%, followed by Rudy Giuliani at 18%, Mike Huckabee at 16%, Mitt Romney at 15%, and Fred Thompson at 11%."

Political Wire: "Political Wire got an advance look at a new Quinnipiac poll in Florida which finds a four-way statistical tie in the state's January 29 Republican primary. Sen. John McCain has 22% of Republican likely primary voters, followed by Rudy Giuliani at 20%, and Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee at 19% each. Since December, McCain is up nine points while Giuliani is down eight points...The Democratic race has no delegates at stake, but Sen. Hillary Clinton holds a solid 52% to 31% lead over Sen. Barack Obama, with John Edwards way back at 9%."

Politcal Wire: "A new Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby poll in Michigan shows Sen. John McCain edging Mitt Romney, 27% to 24%, with Mike Huckabee trailing with 15% support."

The Buying of the President 2008: "The Center for Public Integrity's quadrennial investigation of how money shpes presidential campaigns." Thanks to beSpacific for the link.

Political Wire: "A new New York Times/CBS News poll shows the Republican presidential race completely upended with Sen. John McCain now leading solidly across the country. McCain is in front with 33%, followed by Mike Huckabee at 18%, Rudy Giuliani at 10%, Mitt Romney at 8%, and Fred Thompson at 8%...Meanwhile, on the Democratic side, Sen. Hillary Clinton leads with 42%, followed by Sen. Barack Obama at 27%, and John Edwards at 11%."

Political Wire: "A new Public Policy Polling survey in South Carolina finds Sen. Barack Obama leading the Democratic presidential race with 44%, followed by Sen. Hillary Clinton at 31% and John Edwards at 16%...In the Republican race, Sen. John McCain leads with 28%, followed by Mike Huckabee at 21%, Mitt Romney at 17% and Fred Thompson at 14%."
