Jonathan Cohn (via The New Republic): "A few months ago, when John McCain decided to address the public's anxiety about unaffordable medical care, he gave the sort of speech we've grown accustomed to hearing from Republicans over the years. Let's encourage people to drop their employer insurance and shop for coverage on their own, he said, since that will create a vibrant market in which people can find better bargains. And since some people will still have trouble paying for insurance, let's give them a tax credit that would help offset the cost. A big problem with this scheme, as critics like me pointed out, was that it wouldn't do much for people who were already sick. Insurance companies generally won't offer coverage directly to people with 'pre-existing conditions,' since they represent such bad financial risks."

Here's a look at the upcoming North Carolina Primary from The Moderate Voice. They're asking, "Is Barack Obama Poised To Lose North Carolina Democratic Primary?"
Political Wire: "A new Mason-Dixon poll in North Carolina shows Sen. Barack Obama's double-digit lead over Sen. Hillary Clinton is eroding. The results now show Obama with a 7 point lead over Clinton, 49% to 42%, with 9% undecided. The poll has a margin of error of 5 points."
Political Wire: "A new InsiderAdvantage survey of likely voters in North Carolina shows Sen. Hillary Clinton having moved from a double digit deficit just two weeks ago to a small lead over Sen. Barack Obama. Clinton leads Obama, 44% to 42% with 14% undecided. The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8%, making the race a statistical dead heat."
James Fallows (via The Atlantic): "The pandering and ignorance-across-party-lines represented by the John McCain-Hillary Clinton united front for a temporary reduction in the gasoline tax should make Americans hold their heads in their hands and moan...I can imagine that John McCain, who boasts about his sketchy command of economics, might consider this a good idea. But the master of policy, Hillary Clinton? Please. This is embarrassing. It makes me long for the good old days of debating about flag pins on the lapel." Thanks to NewMexiKen for the link.

The Moderate Voice: "On the 5th anniversary of President Bush's declaration that major combat operations in Iraq were over, the Pentagon reported that American combat deaths were again on the upswing and in April were the highest in seven months."
Juan Cole: "5 Years after George W. Bush's infamous speech aboard the USS Lincoln, the mission seems incomplete. Bush imagined that he could get rid of Saddam Hussein and install exiled businessman and bank fraudster Ahmad Chalabi in his place. Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz told Congress that the US would be out of Iraq, except for a division (20,000 men or so), by October of 2003. Wolfowitz and other Bush officials depicted Iraqis as secular and downplayed the possibility of ethnic violence in the aftermath of the overthrow of the Baath Party."
